Re: Kefir

Strained (like yoghurt) Kefir makes a fabulous base for cheesecake. It's deliciously sour and full of flavour. If you use gelatin (or a jelly) in the non-baked recipe you won't lose the goodness of the kefir

Home made bread is hard to beat! These loaves look delicious.
I've taken to using a pizza stone lately to bake the traditional round soda and wholemeal loaves. Pre-heated in the oven it makes a great job.

Re: Charity - what organisation is genuine?

Have donated to concern for years through monthly direct debit. Seems to be legit organisation but then we used to also support Bothar and look at the story that came out recently about that charity. I agree with you 100% regarding VdeP. Yes, we used to give regularly to Concern and 'bought' the Bo...

Charity - what organisation is genuine?

I've become very leery of charities lately but I do want to help and pay it forward, either in this country or abroad. For many years now we've donated by DD to Sightsavers and we used to also have one for VdeP. Unfortunately, while local volunteers appear to be genuinely helpful, I know too many 'u...

Re: What is the cheapest pay as you go SIM option?

I want a seperate number, but I don't want to top it up every month since I'll only be using it to SMS about four times a year max. I may not keep it after that once the job is done (this sounds dodgy but it absolutely isn't). So when I buy a SIM, it usually comes with credit to the amount your pay...

Re: All Things Baking

Pigging out tonight with freshly baked white scones and smoked salmon. I used to make perfect rounded scones - carefully rolled and cut with a glass - too much messing and handling. Now I get a quicker, fluffier result and a lot less messing with cut-off scraps. https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hNt17aFTl...

Re: All Things Baking

For those who have an excess of apples (or rhubarb) they freeze really well IMO. I core and section our apples(using a gadget that does both at the same time), toss in lemon juice and bag them with a vacuum packing machine. Before I had either the cutting/coring gadget (which is cheap) or the vacuum...

If you're stuck, you can cut them to fit from ordinary coffee filters. I can get 6 rounds out of one filter.

Pavlova is a dead easy dessert to make, albeit takes a little advance work. If disaster happens and it falls apart, there's always Eton Mess with the exact same ingredients. None ever gets wasted in this house either :)

Anyone for Strawberry Pavlova (with a few grapes thrown in) at the weekend? Sunday is supposed to be good in terms of weather. This is on my to-do list.

I made one large circle and one smaller meringue 'lid' in this one with 4 egg whites and 150gms sugar.
