Legalising assisted suicide
I listened to a story on the radio of an Irish woman who traveled to Switzerland an had assisted suicide without a terminal illness Link. Her family was only informed when they received her ashes in the post. There's been a lot of discussion in Ireland about bringing it here but others say they're c...

Is Ireland racist?
Having a black cousin, she says that she has seldom experienced racism in Ireland bar a few drunk men calling her the n-word. She has lived in the States as a kid and been here for over a decade and definitely doesn't believe there is institutional racism like over there. A few of her relatives say ...

Lying to people about their appearance
I was working last week and overheard my colleague saying how she never compliments her teenage daughter on her appearance but accomplishments (e.g you're smart, hardworking, nice). She says that she wants her daughter to know that even if she's not conventionally attractive, she still has worth. It...

Why do the Irish/Brits take so many drugs?
First of all, this isn't a criticism directed towards drug users. I think adults should be allowed to do what they want with their body. That being said, I do wonder why our cocaine and ecstasy use is one of the highest in the world.

Re: Ireland's suicide epidemic
It's hard to say something useful about suicide. It's horrible. One good friend of mine killed herself and several other close contacts also over the years. A lovely friend of mine lost her father to suicide and it devastated her so badly. If there's one thing I think is dangerous it's the dancing ...

Ireland's suicide epidemic
Having lived in three countries, I don't think I heard about suicide as much as I have in Ireland. A lot of foreigners and Irish people who emigrate abroad say the same thing. Is there a suicide epidemic? I know suicide rates have fallen since the 2000s (though a lot are inaccurately classified by c...

Is America now the 'black sheep' of the Western World?
My uncle grew up in Ireland in the 70s and 80s. Everyone he talked to wanted to move there. He grew up and lived in California for some time, moved to other countries and then came back. As a professor in college, he says that most people he's talked to now have a mixed view of the States and while ...

Re: Race and dating preferences
No I don’t find black men attractive - am I racist ? Do I give a flying fck ?? Interesting. Would you say you're turned off by the aesthetics of black men or the stereotype of black people? It's an important distinction to make. A lot of people would say that white people are perceived as more attr...

Race and dating preferences
Do you think that one can be racist for having a dating preference? I don't think so given as the majority of people don't choose what they find attractive but it's a debate that's been going on for a couple of years now. During COVID, Grindr removed their race filter in support of Black Lives Matte...

Re: Psychiatric euthanasia
I’ve seen people with far less much happier than in our society. Anyone thinking of making big decisions should at least go somewhere else and experience something different. Perspective is everything. Someone from 100 years ago with the type of technology we have today would consider themselves ro...

Would this country be better off smoking weed?
Alcohol is a major part of Irish culture and apart from the good times, it drives the economy to an extent. But no one can deny the negative effects when it's taken in excess. The majority of physical/sexual assaults, domestic violence cases and robberies are carried out by those under the influence...

Psychiatric euthanasia
Do you think it's right? Canada was supposed to expand it for those who sole wish to die was a mental disorder but they've delayed it until March of next year as people are concerned there are not enough safeguards. Belgium and the Netherlands have offered assisted suicide/euthanasia for depression ...

Why is birthright citizenship bad?
My college professor said that had Ireland still allowed citizenship b y birth, the country would have crashed harder in 2008. I don't know much about politics or economics but I have heard that jus soli citizenship causes a burden on taxpayers if people with a low standard of education move to a co...
