Re: A pity that this place is so quiet
I never realised that I wasn't logged in. When I checked the odd time, I debated whether to bother posting before deciding it wasn't worth bringing on the hounds of others jumping up and down. From reading this, I think I'll sign out of the echo chamber and just leave it there.

Re: Anyone still glued to this?
Macron and Shultz tried to talk to Putin before the war started to try to avert the war. Putin ignored them. Putin gambled on the West appeasing him like was done in Donbas in 2014, Georgia, Chechnya, Armenia, Syria, etc. This time the west didn't roll over. Putin is still gambling on the west getti...

Re: Recycling Madness
The Bandon "Civic Amenity Site" (recycling center in other words) is a bit more sensible. The unwritten rule is that if you think something is salvageable, it gets put outside the bin. That way, you can pick it if you want. I got a grand 50m extension lead on a reel for free. I took it so ...

Re: Anyone still glued to this?
If you read Putin's ravings from 2 years ago, he wants to restore the Soviet Union. He wants Russian troops in Berlin.
I wouldn't be surprised if he wants to emulate Tzar Alexander and take Paris. After all in his warped view, it's Russian (as Tzar Alexander took it once in battle)

There is an easy path to peace and always has been . Wow. If you are so sure of an easy path to peace that's acceptable to both sides, you're a better diplomat than all of the UN and if you pull off this easy path to peace, there's a Nobel Prize in it for you. I hope you are not subscribing to the ...

I am also fascinated by people saying "oh my house has gone up by €X thousand". I never understood that. Unless you are planning on selling and not living in a house, the "profit" from rising prices is meaningless to you. I am planning on staying where I am until I'm carried out ...

Re: Annoyances & Irritations
The Yanks have announced an early summer visitation. What did I do to deserve this? 🥺 I'm rapidly looking for flights for 10 days around that visit and planning on leaving the phone at home. Sitting on a rock in Spain with a few good books to escape the constant news cycle around this is the goal....

Is this the thin edge of the wedge and how long until people push back? On the "BEV only" route, the German transport minister pushed back as it's unfeasible for all vehicles and there's a push for synthetic fuels (from plant waste or CO2) in Motorsport and a push for hydrogen in the heavy...

Oh I understand the insulation in the attic and pumping walls works wonders (having done it to a early 70's semi-D I lived in before). It's the enforced nature that I've a major problem with. Secondary is knowing our lot driven by the Greens, they'll try to be best in class and try to enforce a high...

More EU green madness, enforced retrofit?
I was reading this article and I thought that it made sense for new builds https://www.rte.ie/news/europe/2023/0314/1362052-energy-standards-eu/ Then I get to this line The energy rating of existing residential buildings will have to meet a minimum E rating by 2030 and gradually improve from there o...

I can see the school arguing for the Burke's being required to lodge money with the high court before continuing in their appeal. There has been plenty of times that was done in the past. Unless the money is lodged, no appeal. If Burke's win, money is returned. It's a reasonable argument to make due...

Re: I like trains...
American railroads are largely about freight and with the huge tonnages carried accidents are bound to happen. Obviously there's always more that can be done to improve safety. A lot of European railway is about Freight also. I remember a few years ago camping on the banks of the Rhine in Koblenz. ...
