I'll throw in another one. The plant container in the picture is typical of hundreds of similar containers put to a variety of uses in parks, gardens and farms around Ireland. When were these containers introduced to Ireland, what was their original purpose, and who were largely responsible for intr...

Re: History Quiz

There is a short tunnel after Blackrock Dart Station that predates Innishannon. It was constructed in 1834 to allow Lord Clonbury to access the seafront from his house as well as affording his estate privacy from the railway. Not quite as impressive admittedly but older it is. https://www.youtube.c...

Re: The "LGBTQIA+ Pledge" for Schoolchildren

An initiative by children to try to encourage more inclusion and diversity in their schools sparks outrage and indignation among adults More state brainwashing. Trying to get us to accept everyone. I think that is deeply subversive conditioning. The whole point of it is to destroy the idea that a bi...

No problem Del. I thought the scene didn't quite look English so I did Google Lens on it. The original artist is English but I'm guessing the scene is fictitious. I think your sketchbook is an amateur artist's copies of different lesser known artworks and sketches, rather than originals - but that d...

I think the British retained control of the seas after the treaty. Maybe sometime after the establishment of the Republic, so some time after 1948 maybe?

Oh! oh! oh!! Kent!! Yes! Kent Station. You know what they say about a stopped clock, Knucklehead! You can see the post box in Streetview, under the fire hose, between the water vending machine and the AMT coffee dock. It’s remarkably small and inconspicuous, and is mostly unnoticed but continues to...

Not Athlone, Riffmongous, nor anywhere close. It’s an urban post box. It was a very early design, and the aperture on the box opens upwards, which unfortunately lets the rain in. For that reason, it’s now located indoors in a busy public building. Although it's Victorian, it pre-dates all post boxes...

It’s curious how topical (even controversial) some postcards were in the past. Images of the Rising were all the rage back in 1916. 58346.jpg The cards in this UCD collection provide a great pictorial record of the damage to Dublin caused by the 1916 Rising: https://digital.ucd.ie/view/ucdlib:38376

Re: History Quiz

There’s at least two disused tunnels on the old west Cork railway line on the stretch from the city to Bandon, a large one near Ballinhassig and the other west of Innishannon just off the main west Cork road. That part of the line was built around 1850 so I imagine it’s one of these. The local TD's ...

As far as I know. none of the census returns from the Irish State are available to the general public in the same way that 1901/1911 are. We'll have to wait til 2027 to see the returns for 1926 (which was the first census taken by the Irish state) as a 100 year rule is applied. Fron the National Arc...

Netflix is better for sure. For most Prime subscribers it's about the free and fast delivery, with the streaming service just an added bonus.
