Re: Annoyances & Irritations

Never understood why so many local/alternative radio stations feel the need to have that kind of "music" behind their news and traffic reports. Probably the same mentality that says you have to have a random musical soundtrack behind a YouTube how-to video.

Re: No more petrol, diesel or hybrid cars from 2035

This lovely gem from what started as a relatively benign "I've never driven on the Continent" query:
Make sure you have Ibedrola, Repsol and Zunder apps fully setup and installed as well as Ionity.

Four apps to be able to drive in one country (Spain)? WTF???

Re: No more petrol, diesel or hybrid cars from 2035

Only time I wanted that Tesla was on boat when we waited for 25 minutes to offload, as the Swiss guy was playing solitaire and watching videos on the Tesla display screen. My camper doesn't have a widescreen telly on the dashboard ... but do I have a lovely table on which I can spread out har...

Re: No more petrol, diesel or hybrid cars from 2035

Someone elsewhere posted a "plan your journey in an EV" route planning thing today. For the mess, I thought I'd ask it to get me to work in a Citroën Ami (politely described in motoring circles as a self-propelled wheelie bin - but I think it's got character ... and doesn't need a license ...

Re: Current severe weather around the world!

The new normal - so banal now that it hardly makes the international news any more: https://youtu.be/m9rSDoBlVhc These are all my local rivers; the main one (La Creuse) rose almost 7.5m above its usual level, and that's with flood-mitigation measures in place. Those measures help us in this area, bu...

Re: No more petrol, diesel or hybrid cars from 2035

Meh ... I think the environmental pros and cons are arguable both ways, especially the "whole of life" impact depending on how far back in the production process you go. Both camps peddle all kinds of non-factual figures to bolster their arguments, with an awful lot of it based on the noti...

Re: No more petrol, diesel or hybrid cars from 2035

If facts are presented to an EV zealot about the unsuitability of an EV for long commutes etc. they'll often react like a bratty teenager "OMG, you are such an outlier, if you don't want one for your weird use case then just don't buy one". That is exactly the treatment I got when I...

Re: No more petrol, diesel or hybrid cars from 2035

Seeing Citroën launch a new cheap-ish model with a half-decent claimed range I toyed with the idea of trading in my 20-year old Mégane. Due diligence took me to a thread in The Other Place to see what were the latest developments on the charging side of things. Jeeeeez, that was a mistake. Gi...

Re: WTF Lidl?

Look they are Lidl so really they are Einhell. They are fine for light enough stuff, but not real trough stuff. Yeah, but if your definition of "real tough stuff" is exactly what they're marketed for, then that's not a valid argument. If it says on the packet "for drilling >800mm hol...

Hey CR, you should be fekked into that box and fast tracked to El Salvador for buying cheap lidl shite. "Tested and certified in Germany" it says on the label - are you telling me now we can't even trust the Germans? Yeah but 70cm is deep enough .... Those bit probably work just fin...

Re: WTF Lidl?

Drilling one single hole hardly counts as "prolonged use" though, does it? And using a masonry bit to drill through masonry is not exactly "heavy duty" either. For the most part, I find their stuff to be "reasonably priced for what you get" ; sometimes you get great val...

Re: Rusty lug nuts - how to get the last three off?

Heat them and try actually tightening them a little first with a stillson wrench before loosening, that usually works. Inadvertently did that before I spotted that they were reverse-threaded. My trusty stillson wrench took two looks at the job and said ... feck this, I'm off to the fix-it pil...

Re: Rusty lug nuts - how to get the last three off?

If you are not using the hubs again then its no big deal what damage you do to the studs. Yep, want to use the hubs (and axle) again. And the wheels! 'Tis the reason I set about acquiring the relic. They don't look that bad and the fact that some came off easily enough is a good sign - this 1.5 met...

Re: Rusty lug nuts - how to get the last three off?

Before I go wrecking things, how hot can I heat those nuts, and is it likely to make any difference? My previous attempts were with a glorified weedkilling flame thrower, so may never have been really as hot as needed. ... 5 or 6 smacks to put an indent in the stud ... D'you mean put an indent in th...

Well ... I tried watching it last night. Managed 40 minutes and gave up. Too much jumping around different timelines for no good reason, and some weird lighting/colour palettes that made no sense to me. Left me with a two-hour hole in my evening, so I settled for a cheesy rom-com instead. Much bette...

Rusty lug nuts - how to get the last three off?

Simple problem, complicated resolution. I have these vintage wheels (WW2 US Army) with vintage tyres that need to be replaced. How do I get the last three nuts off? :x https://i.postimg.cc/cJyDYTPS/Lug-Nuts-1.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/QdW4Hv4m/Lug-Nuts-2.jpg So far, I've tried soaking them in W...

The little digger that could!

Cheap Chinese diggers get a bit of a raw deal from the Kubota fanbois and other lads who seem to have several tens of thousands of euros to spend, but my little machine is back at work now that the sun's come out for a bit and I can't cope with any more indoor renovation. An unexpected few dry days ...

Licences can only be granted by the courts ... That's an awful waste of court resources, there's no good reason why the courts should be involved in granting licences for anything. I couldn't quite get my head around the process here in France when I first came across it: want to serve drink at you...

Re: Annoyances & Irritations

This new thing where the lid on a plastic bottle remains tied to the ring around the neck and won't come right off. Yeah, I know it's supposed to save the whales/ducks/squirrels/whatever (really just a way to get more lids into the recycling bin) but it's a fekkin nuisance having to rip them off the...

Re: People who get caught by "paedophile hunters"

Unless I'm missing something, I presume the way it works is that the "paedophile hunter" posing as an early -mid teens girl randomly messages a guy on social media? If so I'm amazed that anyone would still be falling for it, I mean it's right up there now with the Nigerian Prince and Ugan...

I collected trailerloads of that softwood every week from the building site. It had come in as packing pieces for industrial racking posts and rails, imported from the US, and was destined for the skip (like so much other stuff that fell to the floor during the build). After an initial sorti...

Windows and doors - making a start.

January's secondary objective, as far as cottage renovation was concerned, was to make (complete) all the windows and doors - one main front door, one three-quarter height "French door" for the kitchen (technically, all my doors are French :) ), five windows for the four rooms and two skyl...
