Re: Rusty lug nuts - how to get the last three off?

Yes - old steel pipe fitted snugly over the end of the spanner. Spanner is a "one-ended" version, sold for use on 1.5" plumbing fittings, with a slight taper on the handle, so it jams into the pipe nicely. I still think you are getting leakage unless you BATE the spanner into the pip...

Re: Rusty lug nuts - how to get the last three off?

They don't look that bad and the fact that some came off easily enough is a good sign - this 1.5 metre extension, you are using it with a spanner? How well is the spanner fitting with the extension, are you getting "leakage". I have a feeling that if you were to acquire a 1.5 inch socket a...

Just watching Prime Time there Jennifer Carroll was mentioned as a possible candidate. Christ. I'd say she's lethal.

Re: Varadkar steps down

Fratboy, divisive, gaffe prone Taoiseach, was he ever suitable for the role or even to be a TD. I assume now that he won't be running in the next GE as he doesn't seem the sort who would be willing to retreat to the back benches IF he were to get elected. Hopefully M. Martin will go too. In some way...

Re: 4yrs on : The "Ventilator shortage "

You are being too generous IMO. There were lots of highly qualified people throughout the world who, in 2020, pointed out how wrong it was to lock down, prevent people from going about their business, don masks, put any credibility in the PCR tests and so on. That 'our lot' followed instructions fr...

Re: 4yrs on : The "Ventilator shortage "

When humans panic, they lose the run of themselves and there will always be opportunists ready to pounce in these situations. Combine that with narcissism, hubris and techno optimism and we get the "let's make ventilators" stuff from around this time in 2020. Also, remember the carefully c...

Re: Yes/Yes campaign and misinformation

I've lost any respect I had for Family Carers Ireland (NGO supposedly representing carers) over this. Yesterday on six one news, a representative made several false statements. Said that a Yes vote would place an "onus" on the state to support carers. She then used the example of the carer...

Re: We didn't call the decade the "10S" when we were living through it

Tens seems to be a problematic term, I've never heard anyone call the 1910s the tens either but it's normal to say the twenties, thirties, forties etc.

Re: Defibrilators (AEDs)

True enough. But do many know when to consider the need for a defib unit, I doubt it. Who has the courage to make the decision that someone needs a shock to the heart to help them. Thats the thing that would worry me. If you use a defib unit on someone who does not need it, what harm can you do apa...

Re: Defibrilators (AEDs)

My understanding is that there is very little training needed to use an AED, the main thing is to keep a cool head and get working immediately. CPR requires more skill but even so, if you do it somewhat correctly it can still make a difference. If someone goes into cardiac arrest you ideally need to...

Defibrilators (AEDs)

Have you thought about what you will do if a loved one goes into cardiac arrest, do you know where your nearest public defibrillator is? I was reminded of this today after reading, of all things, about footballer Gareth Bale installing a private one in his house. I was also thinking about the ongoin...

Re: Yes/Yes campaign and misinformation

According to John McGuirk, Scallan repeatedly tried to ask a question during the press conference but was ignored by the facilitator. It seems as though the conference was then coming to an end and Scallan thought he had an opportunity to ask his question without the conference microphone. This will...

Re: Yes/Yes campaign and misinformation

What's behind this "women's place in the home" misrepresentation? Has the government been advised that there are legal issues coming down the line with a worsening housing crisis and mothers being forced, even more so than before, to take up paid employment for economic reasons. Or is it j...

A lot of waffle about this on Katie Hannon's show last night. Re: the care amendment, the message seems to be, just vote Yes and trust us that we will recognise the work of carers and "strive" to provide support for them. LOL. Let's consider the current situation where the state "ende...

Re: Yes/Yes campaign and misinformation

Anyone who thinks that this or any previous government gives a sh*te about carers should consider the situation with homecare services. This is a vital support for (unpaid) carers. As far back as 2010, Prime Time uncovered shocking abuse in this sector. Also, Mary Harney had, according to the below ...

Just read that gript article - yes, it does seems like misinformation and manipulation. E.g Roderic O'Gorman's recent comments where he implied that family carers (people like me and thousands of others) should vote Yes. When all this proposed change will do is oblige the State to "strive"...

Re: NCT Pass or fail

Rust is always the thing I fear most and often signals the beginning of the end for the car. I am able to do a fair amount of work on my cars if it involves replacing parts - but rust, fabricating sections and welding - no. IME some of the testers love to see an older (20+ year old) car in though an...

Re: Leaking radiator

Thanks, I'm currently letting it drip away. Bleed valve also open and slowly dripping. Closing the lockshield appears to have isolated it from the system as I'm not now seeing any pressure drop on the system pressure gauge. Ultimately, that rad and probably several other 40 year old rads in the hous...

Re: Leaking radiator

I tried the epoxy, no joy, the fact that I was trying to fill an actively leaking wet hole was probably the reason. Anyhow,I have now managed to close the outlet (it only took 1.5 turns?) so hopefully that valve is working and the leak will stop shortly. Small rad, single, about 160 cm wide by 50 cm...

Leaking radiator

Basic plumbing question for gubu - I have a radiator with a pinhole near the top. If I close the inlet valve will the leak stop or slow down or will it make no difference. I can close the inlet valve and know it will stop the rad getting hot but will cold water continually backflow into it and come ...
