Re: "Vintage" 1990s PCs
A lot are destroyed due to leaking components and batteries. Repairing them is expensive. So they are disappearing. I'd like an old Mac. But it's just clutter and hoarding.

Re: Apple STUDIO Mac with M1 Ultimate processor
Very minor quibbles. Issues with external drives is very common across all computers. I do fairly big file copies to external drives, HHD, SSD and M2 drives and I often have issues with different USB ports and enclosures. So I monitor the drive transfer speed and notice when I get something slows do...

Re: Apple STUDIO Mac with M1 Ultimate processor
If you can afford it and can use the power (and are embedded in the Ecosystem) then why not. I benchmarked a relatives M1Max laptop against my own AMD laptop and it was only about 10% faster but cost about €1500 more. His was lighter and about 5 times the battery life. Mine can play games his can't....

Virgin Media router Hub 3 isn't great for Wifi.
But of all the solutions to bad WiFi we had. A cheap Mesh (TPLink) solved them all.

Re: Note on a banned poster
You can just put the overly dramatic on ignore. So its not really damaging to the site.
What's damaging is people actually leaving. If its struggling to attract and retain people.

Re: Note on a banned poster
I don't just mean clickbait - his posts (in my humble opinion!) have prompted some interesting discussions in parts. The Jordan Peterson thread is a good example - maybe he started it to troll, but as it developed other posters chimed in with sensible and interesting discussion. Same is true about ...

Re: "Vintage" 1990s PCs
We had 386dx in college but the mac's of that era seemed so much cooler. I used to sneak into another department to use their Mac's. But I didn't really get interested or have access to my own computer until the 486 and Apple LCII.

Re: Note on a banned poster
That’s a lot of work on you though. I used to moderate a group on another social media site and just a few childish pests really became a time sink. It’s hard to argue the nuance via this medium (at least, I find it that way). Seems like a big ask of anyone. Moderation is a tough gig you have to be...

Re: Note on a banned poster
A forum takes all sorts, and needs to welcome all sorts. As long as nobody is being a dick, I don't want this forum to take a view on whether or not it is better to question the type of potato to use in a gratin or to question the machinations of the Global Elite. You should be able to question bot...

Re: Note on a banned poster
It depends what you use the site for I suppose. I get online in my spare time when I’m usually headed for rest rather than taking on the worlds problems or conspiracy theories. So when the first thing I see is several hysterical posts like this* in the recent topics, I have closed the browser tab a...

Re: Note on a banned poster
My approach is to put the user on ignore and unsubscribe from the thread. Or leave the forum. Works much better for me than getting into semantic argument about threads or posts. If a thread or post exists it's because it's been allowed. If it's been allowed then I have my answer and there's no purp...

Re: Note on a banned poster
It's up the site ethos what it wants to allow be posted. But people who do this kinda of posting aren't interested in a debate (the purpose of a forum) they want a platform to publish. A forum that allows this is forever associated with it. You won't put that horse back in the barn after it's bolted.

Re: "Vintage" 1990s PCs
The EV argument is not that simple. The resources in building a new EV might be more than keeping the old diesel going. But in terms of air quality and pollution if you drive both for the next 10 years the EV will be far better. Especially in a city. Money wise you'd have work out total costs includ...
