Heat them and try actually tightening them a little first with a stillson wrench before loosening, that usually works.

Had an ECG this morning, the doctor just rang and told me to go straight to hospital which I'm on my way to now . . not looking forward to joining the trolley corridor queues for the night but hey . . at least I'm not in Gaza!

I'd imagine it's a slightly more expensive option to get the mechanic to change the tyres, rather than you going to direct to a dedicated tyre centre yourself. The wheels will also need alignment which most tyre centres can do.
