Re: Dealing with unhelpful stresses in wood
Are you sure he's French? Are you sure he's not American? It seems to me like the kind of snake oil 'solution' I'd expect to see from Jonathan Katz-Moses, the woodworker I dislike more than any other, because he's so completely full of himself and his own BS. Now that you mention it, I could well b...

Re: How critical are carbon brush sizes?
CR, ...we seriously need to talk, you appear to be putting more effort into your dancing than property and tool maintenance. This has to stop :D All work and no play would make CR a dull boy - and very miserable man. :P The last three weeks have been spent entirely on property, tool and vehicle mai...

Re: Dealing with unhelpful stresses in wood
Seeing as it's November, thought I'd dig up an old thread for this question, and anyway it's on the same topic. Many of the French woodworking YouTubers have been asked by Rubio to make specimen pieces for a new showroom in France. One of them has made an "XXXL" table, and used a...

Re: How critical are carbon brush sizes?
Use 9 x 6mm nominal brushes, whatever length you reckon is most appropriate. You'll find them in 12, 15, 18 and 20mm lengths typically. Use 320+ grit wet and dry paper to very gently tune the fit of the brush if it's not in fact a little undersized. I expect the ones you have would be spec'd as 9x6...

Re: How critical are carbon brush sizes?
Will put up pics of the brushes later; in the meantime, this is the Amazon listing for the one I bought a few years ago (still available): https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B08DHJ7C4B?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_dt_b_product_details I've only just bought forty new belts for it, so can't wait too long - there's are...

How critical are carbon brush sizes?
Looks like my belt sander's going to need new brushes urgently. The unhelpful instruction manual doesn't give any details as to model type or brush dimensions, but my calipers says what remains of the old ones is 8.7 x 5.3mm x a well-worn stub, with a 10mm plain disc at the other end. All I can find...

Re: Christmas ads!!
Personally I'd do it in January (worst time of the year) isha, but that holiday is gonna be beautiful! I've never understood the Anglo-Irish (+/-American) obsession with cramming more and more "Christmas" into the months before the 25th December, when there's a heck of a lot of miserable ...

Re: Something lurking in the woodpile ... :-/
So who makes the rules? :? Trying to get some To Do list things done, I was working late-ish in the cottage/chicken-shed. Just after I'd returned to the house, I hear a very insistent "mew, mew, mew, mew, mew" outside the back door. BigKittn - now very much the one with the most character ...

Re: Annoyances & Irritations
I've had (some of) my Christmas decorations up since May.
I did try to take them all down before my mother came, but I forgot the garlands on the ceiling. And the angel in the crib.

Re: Storm Ciaran 1st-2nd November, heavy rainfall - flooding very likely
Well done on surviving The Ciaran. Ciarán was nothing compared to what's going on outside at the moment. Power went out half an hour ago ... 143 ongoing incidents in our area, according to the network website. Might have it back in time for breakfast, they say. If I sleep on the floor, will I have ...

Re: Storm Ciaran 1st-2nd November, heavy rainfall - flooding very likely
"Kee-rrhan" has been and gone, today it's Domingos who's messing things up. Less violent winds ("only" 50-80km/h") but coming from the south, so more damaging as it lifts the tiles and drives the rain onto the timbers underneath. The kittens have had to abandon their bailing...

Re: Something lurking in the woodpile ... :-/
As expected, not a lot of "new" progress to report. This afternoon, I was able to immobilise Polly long enough to remove the tick from behind her ear, and she didn't race away after; she's still awfully jumpy though. For the first time, MammyCat graced us with her presence for a daytime fe...

Re: Storm Ciaran 1st-2nd November, heavy rainfall - flooding very likely
I said it before, you need to spend less time dancing and more time property maintenance. It's not the dancing that causes the delays - it's the going away for two, three or four weeks at a time, pretending that I care about being a productive member of society. :( Anyway, I've just watched a...

Re: Something lurking in the woodpile ... :-/
I have always had dogs and not really a cat person, but I could get there.. is it my imagination or are these exceptionally cute cats? Well, BigKittn is particularly cute, and Polly* is really really pretty (when her bushy tail isn't full of sawdust and wood shavings); the others I'd rate as "...

Re: Storm Ciaran 1st-2nd November, heavy rainfall - flooding very likely
All good, K. Five of the six waiting for their breakfast this morning. And no more of the roof at ground level than there was at the end of last week. :( Mans best friend is a dog, they wont desert you. Furry littles balls of fluff will feck off the minute they get a smell of the neighbours opening ...

Re: Storm Ciaran 1st-2nd November, heavy rainfall - flooding very likely
The morning after the night before ... For us, it wasn't any worse than many a recent storm. For the Bretons, though :o That forecast of 150km/h winds and 10m high waves turned out to be a bit on the low side - the winds came in at 170-200km/h (and still howling through at 150-ish), and the waves to...

ScaredyCat showed up for the evening meal, and is (very slowly) accepting more in the way of physical contact. I might be able to get a determination of age and sex by the end of next week. Okay, well that "end of next week" came quickly! ScaredyCat is definitely a tom. He's rapidly catch...

Re: Storm Ciaran 1st-2nd November, heavy rainfall - flooding very likely
What's the story with Ile de Re and Ile de Oleron. I presume the Pont Ile de Re is shut at times like this? On this occasion, the story is "nothing special". The worst of the winds will pass somewhat to the north, and those islands are fairly well used to wild Atlantic storms (especially ...

Re: Storm Ciaran 1st-2nd November, heavy rainfall - flooding very likely
Hmmm ... a decision will be made "very soon" about whether or not issue a mandatory evacuation order for the Ile de Noirmoutier in the Bay of Biscay. That's a 50km² island with a resident population of about 20,000 and one of the most popular seaside destinations in Western France. That's ...
