Re: Storm Ciaran 1st-2nd November, heavy rainfall - flooding very likely

What's the story with Ile de Re and Ile de Oleron. I presume the Pont Ile de Re is shut at times like this? On this occasion, the story is "nothing special". The worst of the winds will pass somewhat to the north, and those islands are fairly well used to wild Atlantic storms (especially ...

Re: Storm Ciaran 1st-2nd November, heavy rainfall - flooding very likely

Hmmm ... a decision will be made "very soon" about whether or not issue a mandatory evacuation order for the Ile de Noirmoutier in the Bay of Biscay. That's a 50km² island with a resident population of about 20,000 and one of the most popular seaside destinations in Western France. That's ...

Does that work? Would the engine oil not cause the shellac to flake off, sooner rather than later, taking the wax with it?

The window frame is made (as much as it can be - waiting for the glue to set before doing the finishing touches) and the window is ready for its hinges and catches. If the winds end up coming from the south-west, the kittens might already be in the best place ... and I might be joining them. Don't think my roof can take much more of these >80km/h winds we've had so much of over the last year. :(

All of this well, well before the watershed if such a thing still exists. Never really understood the concept of/imposition of a broadcasting "watershed" especially in respect of "language" - there was never anything on after 9pm that I hadn't already heard in many a school yard...

Here in France, the forecast of most severe weather events is handled in a relatively low-key fashion, as we've seen it all before and people are generally quite sensible. This week it's different. Our Minister for the Interior this evening has issued a "shelter in place" advisory for ever...

The updates will probably slow down a bit from here on, because (a) we've made a heck of a lot of progress already, so the next steps will be less dramatic and newsworthy; and (b) I made a promise to myself that I'd only go chasing my Bohemian Dream if I knuckled down and cleared a load of undone j...

Ciaran (no fada?) has triggered a "front page" warning on the French meterological site (meteofrance.com) - first time I've seen that in a long time. They're being cautious with regard to the colour of the warning saying it has yet to be determined; but in the meantime, they're saying the ...

Today's developments are probably best summed up by this pic: https://i.postimg.cc/RZyZrMq6/Latest-Update-10291.jpg The three kittens are now pretty much completely domesticated, in that they come racing up to me when they're called, will let me pick them up and tolerate having their eyes/ears/mouth...

Another Czech crush of mine ... but :-(

For years, I've had the video below saved in my "c'mon, cheer up" playlist. Patricia Janečková doing the very best interpretation of "the Doll Song" from the Tales of Hoffman* that I've ever seen - not just signing it magnificently, but being an amazing "mechanical doll"...

What's surprised me most about the way this week has gone is how quickly this whole group has suddenly come out of the shadows and (to greater and lesser extents, depending on which one) settled into comfortable cohabitation. Until I my professional rambling made it impractical to keep any pet, I've...

I reckon the mice have taken refuge in the house because the Great Outdoors has become far too dangerous for them! Slight tangent: yesterday, I saw a crow have a serious shouting match with a buzzard and run him off the property. Here's one that's come at me from the side: the phrase "bump down" meaning to reduce. Wut??? A bump , by definition, is something that's raised above the level of its surroundings, and to bump something means to nudge it with minimal force - forwards, backwards or sideways, which may resul...

Apart from the MDF, it reminds me of the style produced by yerman with the fancy workbench. 8-)

My front room (don't have a hallway) needs one of those; it's been on the To Do (Eventually) list for a long time, but I reckon I'll have moved out to the chicken shed before it gets done.

The last few days in my workshop, a couple of large, slow moving flys kept landing on my head and constantly buzzing into my face.
