Yeah, it’ll work. Quench in used oil while red hot and let it cool. Clean any residue with acetone, seal with shellac or lacquer etc.

I'm stripping back the felt roof over our back door that I did 15 years ago.

It wasn't leaking but was a mess and the felt was never really burnt on...
