Retrofitting, solar panels etc. costs and quality of work
Retrofitting, solar panels etc. costs and quality of work
Someone on the Irish PV group on FB posted a quote they received from a "one stop shop" which included
Windows
Doors
Air to water system
Radiators
6 kW solar PV with battery
No mention of any insulation (maybe the property is already very good in this respect)
92 grand minus 22 grand of grants = 70 grand.
Who is going to pay that? The solar installation isn't even that big and the power it produces will be gobbled by the heat pump.
Re: solar, there is now a frenzied panic to install rooftop solar panels on residential properties. Prices keep going up and as this is the Irish construction industry we're talking about, there have to be major concerns that the work won't be done right. There could be problems with leaks or wind loadings which won't become apparent until the first big storm.

You are correct on every front. Certain things during the construction of such expensive costly apartments for example, require builders self certify their workBrianD3 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 8:04 pm Someone on the Irish PV group on FB posted a quote they received from a "one stop shop" which included

Its like the fox certifying that all the chickens were present Mr Farmer when I locked up the coup for the night.

You will no doubt be told that its possible with the right package to become virtually self sufficient as regards your energy .
Complete bullshit. I spent many, many months discussing this as it was what I was considering. My mentor was a long time friend of a family member. He says that no matter what option you designed, you would have to factor in a large diesel generator as part of your back up. And he knows what he's talking about as he designs and sets up renewable enrgy systems in europe for local communities and has spent his lifetime at it. And has his own company doing this.

Do clerks of works still operate in the construction industry? A lot of them used to go into the local authorities as inspectors, hard to put one over on those guys.
Re: Retrofitting, solar panels etc. costs and quality of work
That's one thing I never thought about when I see solar panels on roofs of houses - wind load. 92 grand, how many years would it take to get a financial return on that ?

I’m doing pv with the last five years, no leaks or panels flying off roofs. Stop gas lighting.BrianD3 wrote: ↑Wed Dec 21, 2022 8:04 pm Someone on the Irish PV group on FB posted a quote they received from a "one stop shop" which included

Where has "wind load" suddenly come from as a problem? There should be no more effect from the wind because of solar panels than you'd get from whatever tiles, slates or corrugated asbestos is already on the roof.
Unless, of course, they're not properly fitted into the roof covering (as they should be).

You must have missed school this day then,
BUILDING CONTROL in Ireland relies on “self-certification” by architects, engineers, surveyors or builders that new buildings comply with statutory requirements – a light-touch regulatory regime introduced in 1990 by then minister for the environment Pádraig Flynn.
Re: Retrofitting, solar panels etc. costs and quality of work
Once a builder, architect, engineer self certifys building works, any misdeeds that have occurred and not discovered for 6 years, then they cant be prosecuted or found liable. Its an amazing statute for bad work.
