Pick of the week from the Salerooms etc....
Re: Pick of the week from the Salerooms etc....
I must check with some mates that play wargames and dress up and reenact battles (Covid has meant I've not seen some of them in 2 years). The have some very real looking kit but need to get the local superintendents approval every year for some of it. Maybe that's just to take it out in public?

I attended Bloomfield Auctions, Belfast today - virtually as opposed to actually being there - which I did well to avoid judging by the amount of coughing that I could hear. Anyway, I digress, and I am here to report that the sale of Michael Collins' hair went ahead today and fetched an incredible £4,400 plus commission - imagine how much his whole head of hair would have been worth!
As for me, I picked up 4 different lots of paintings for the massive sum of £23 plus commission - I think I know who got the better deal.
Sold for £1,400.[/b
Bought by me for £12.

I couldn't help wondering was the buyer some Josef Mengele loon who is intent on creating a new Michael Collins from the DNA in the hair.

Re: Pick of the week from the Salerooms etc....
An Early 19th century Irish School View of Carlisle Bridge and Sackville Street, Dublin, caused a bit of a stir at Gorringe's, East Sussex salerooms this afternoon. The oil on canvas painting (15¾" x 21½") carried an estimate of £1,000/1,500 but was finally knocked down for £17,000! A "sleeper" if ever there was one and I wonder where it will appear next. A nice view with lots of interest for the historian or anybody with an interest in Dublin City well before the 'rare ould times'. Rashers Tierney wouldn't even have been a twinkle in his mammy's eye when this view was painted.
For those of you interested, it's possible to get a massively enlarged, detailed view here: https://www.easyliveauction.com/catalog ... 2-lot-373/

Lovely painting. I can see Kelly's Gunpowder Office building on the left hand corner before you turn into O'Connell St.
Re: Pick of the week from the Salerooms etc....
Have to say the place looks a hell of a lot better in that than it does now. Pity 1916 had to happen.

An Aladdin's Cave of collectables at Joe Mullen's "Collectors Cabinet" sale in Shankill on Saturday 15th October! These are just a few of my favourites - there's masses more including much from 1916 and the more recent 'troubles' in Northern Ireland.

I've got a ship's telescope - not in 100% condition - that my dad has had since he was a kid.
My late granddad was supposed to have brought it back from America in the 20s. Woukd never sell it but would like to know more of it's history - this seemed like the page to ask!

Collectors of police and militaria are well catered for in Bloomfield's (Belfast) auction on Tuesday 31st January.
450 Lots of medals, posters, uniforms, Unionist & Republican ephemera, Nazi items, and Michael Collins' walking stick will come under the hammer. The same saleroom sold a lock of his hair last year for £18,000 !
Militaria is one of the few areas of collecting that I've consciously kept away from over the years despite the quantity and quality of material available. There's something that doesn't sit right with me in collecting Nazi memorabilia - the association with it too awful and too recent, and much the same as anything associated with the most recent 'troubles' in Ireland. Still I can see the attraction for collectors. Enjoy, if that's the correct word.

One of my favourite sales as you just never know what gems will turn up - if I was still a serious ceramic collector the "South Mayo Rifles" mess plate would be a must-have; as for the Uzi, if only you could get it restored to operational condition it might come in handy for a bank job or the coming revolution.
