I've been finding loads of medicine vials (empty) around the place this last year. Some of them are actually quite attractive, so I've been putting them to one side to clean them up and make a display with.
The children had great fun one year excavating one of our banks, where they found a load of smashed pottery, trying to make up one whole piece. In the end, though, they found it was easier just to dig raw clay out of the ditch on the neighbour's land and make their own!
The previous (or previous-but-one) owner of our house seems to have been an awful fella for just throwing stuff in a heap out the back - broken plates, empty bottles, broken tools, old plastic, bits of wire, baling twine ... Initial metal detecting has turned up nothing of interest yet - just screws, nails, staples and strands of barbed wire. It's really annoying - there's so much metal buried there that it's almost impossible to find something that's just fallen into the dust, unless you know where it landed.
