Irish Country Homes 2-day sale - Kilcolgan, Co.Galway 25th/26th July 2021

I'm hoping to make this thread a 'best of what's on' each week (auctions, car boot sales, shops etc.) and to kick off I'd like to mention Aidan Foley's 2-Day sale at Kilcolgan, Co. Galway. Aidan is an old hand in the auctioneering game with more than 25 years experience in holding sales. Starting off modestly with just a single saleroom at Doneraile, Co.Cork he now also has large salerooms at Sixmilebridge, Co.Clare and Kilcolgan, Co.Galway. With the advent of the Covid pandemic he has made the move to online auctions seamlessly and has held a number of very large and successful sales in the past eighteen months.

The 2-day sale at Galway is "Online Only" but with physical viewing available today (Fiday 23rd) and tomorrow. It is the size an eclectic nature of his sales that have made them so popular as you can be guaranteed to find almost anything from the proverbial kitchen sink to an Old Master. Bargains are there to be had too but as with other auctions - all of which now have some form of online presence - they are getting harder to come by. Gone are the days when bad weather might have reduced the numbers attending a sale and presented the opportunity to pick up a bargain. The internet provides a seemingly infinite number of bidders and just when you think you have a Lot in your grasp a bid comes in from Tokyo or some other far-flung location.

Anyway, returning to the Kicolgan sale - there are almost 1,200 Lots ranging from Fine Art, Furniture, Music, Taxidermy, Collectables and much more with many items at very realistic starting prices. It will be hot over the two days of the sale so everybody will at the beach - which could mean less competition - from Irish bidders anyway.

New kids on the block....

South Dublin Auction - Thursday 29th July 2021

South Dublin Auction on Dublin's Longmile Road are recent newcomers to the auction scene only launching in July 2020 - right in the middle of the pandemic. However, they did not let this minor problem get in their way and swiftly moved online. Traditional houseold auctions with 650/750 Lots are held every Thursday at 2.30pm with viewing and bidding available "online only" until Covid restrictions are further relaxed.

The sales are suitable for everybody and while there are treasures for the astute collector, there are also many household items - furniture, fridges, washing machines, rugs etc. for anybody wishing to fit out a house on a tight budget. This weeks' sale is no exception with lots for the collector such as the rare postcard trade sample album from Brian O'Higgins' publishing company from the 1930's. A highly collectable item in its own right it has added interest as Brian O'Higgins was a colourful character with a long track record of republican activity - he was in the GPO in 1916, fought in the War of Independence and on the Anti-treaty side in the Civil War, was both M.P and T.D for West Clare for some years, as well as being President of Sinn Fein....

Image

A rather nice enamel sign for Park Drive cigarettes, a very heavy (300kg) Vietnamese Buddha figure and a Wrangler Jeep are among the 750 Lots in the sale. In my personal experience I have found the company very reputable to deal with and their packing of items sent by courier would put some longer established firms to shame.

Bloomfield Auctions, East Belfast

Sale - Tuesday 3rd August 2021

In contrast to S.D.A, Bloomfield Auctions have been in business for over 30 years servicing the Greater Belfast area. MD Karl Bennett is the driving force behind the auction house and is passionate about the business. Weekly General sales are held every Tuesday with Specialist sales of Militaria, Silver, Coins, Art etc. also held as the need arises.

Most weeks Southern buyers will find a wealth of items unique to this corner of the Ireland and its recent troubled past - Loyalist and Republican, RUC/UDR/British Army uniforms, paraphernalia, books etc. - alongside more traditional fare such as toys, art, ceramics, silver, coins and banknotes gathered in from Belfast and its hinterland. My personal experience of dealing with Bloomfield has been very positive and I can recommend them to others.

This weeks' sale takes place at 6:00pm on Tuesday and the catalogue is well worth checking-out. A slightly weaker than usual sale but there's still some great items to be had.

Ross's Auction Rooms, Belfast

Irish Art Sale - Wednesday 18th August

Ross's Auctioneers & Valuers, Belfast are a long established firm and hold weekly general sales at their Montgomery Street salerooms, as well as three 'stand alone' dedicated sales of Furniture & Antiques; Jewellery & Watches and Fine Art every month. It is the last mentioned that I'm covering here as Ross's monthly Art Sale is a great place for the art collector on a modest budget to pick up a bargain.

Each month 700+ pieces of art go up for sale with prices starting as low as £20/30 and rising to respectable four figure sums. Plenty of big names in Irish art regularly figure and in next weeks' sale William Percy French, Maurice Canning Wilks, Gladys Maccabe and Graham Knuttel are just a few of the well known names. The online catalogue provides quality images of every lot so that you know exactly what you're bidding on. There really is something to suit every pocket and Ross's provide an excellent packing and shipping service at very little cost - especially good value if you're lucky enough to pick up several items.

Image

Currently the auctions are run as timed live events and signing up, bidding etc. is child's play - it must be as I have been buying there for some years now.

The catalogue for the current sale is available here: https://www.rosss.com/auction/irish-paintings/577/

Two 'gems' this week for about the same sort of money. Tomorrow's sale at South Dublin Auction features a wonderful mahogany bar Lot.527. carrying a modest estimate of €2000/4000 - only trouble is that you'll need a substantial mansion to accommodate it! Catalogue with live bidding here: https://www.easyliveauction.com/auction ... inauction/

The second item that caught my eye is included in Fonsie Mealy's Two-day clearance sale at Howth Castle on the 8th/9th September: Lot.324. A Wanted/Reward poster from 1907 looking for information regarding the theft of the Irish Crown Jewels. I suspect that there are far fewer of this poster in existence than there are of the 1916 Proclamation. A major scandal at the time, and which remains unsolved to this day, a real piece of history with a paltry estimate of €2000/3000.

This week it has to be Joe Mullen's "Collectors Cabinet" sale at Bray, Co.Wicklow.
Militaria collectors and Irish historians should have a field day as there's much from both sides of the political divide to whet the appetite. There's much else including books, coins, banknotes, toys etc. and estimates are very reasonable in most cases.

For those with deep pockets and fed up with their neighbour/bank manager or ex , why not go for Lot.150. an RPG7 Russian-made, shoulder-launched, anti-tank, rocket-propelled grenade launcher - complete with rocket. Est: €4000/6000.

Nothing special this week but for collectors of militaria - especially relating to Ireland - the 2-day sale at Bloomfield Auctions in Belfast on Tues.28th & Weds.29th September has much to offer. Enough weapons to start your own paramilitary organisation; a wide variety of uniforms, medals and even art from Michael Stone (presumably the Michael Stone) and the star item - a prison gate from Long Kesh!

All the details you need here: https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/auct ... bloomfield
There are two separate catalogues!with some 600+ Lots.

Not as much time as usual to devote to this subject recently but the weekly auction held at South Dublin Auctions continues to produce interesting bits and bobs. It's one of the few traditional style house clearance salerooms in the Republic and you're likely to find just about anything! Here's a few pics of things that I spotted this week. Hmmmm, of the stuff I know about I wouldn't expect the two Carlton Ware dishes to make more than a tenner. Retail you might get a tenner each. Local charity shop had a Carlton Ware tomato plate recently think they optimistically wanted €8 - about what its worth retail. But in Ireland stuff gets some strange values.

Hit and miss. Victor Mee https://www.victormeeauctions.ie/ near Belturbet sells salvage from time to time but realistically a salvage yard is the best place to go looking. https://collectireland.com/salvage/

A massive sale of Militaria and 'Troubles' related material comes up for auction in Belfast tomorrow - well worth a look if that's your area of collecting.

Looking back to the previous auction, that 1936 Berlin Olympics silver plated cigarette box has to have gone to someone who collects ironic items 8-)

Sale is on this Saturday so you still have an opportunity to bid on it. Not my cup of tea but each to their own.

Never heard about it until you posted. More total bs as far as I'm concerned but he/they are very talented at PR and making loads of dosh.

Seems it sold for £1 million - which is about £1 million more than it's worth as the original item has been totally devalued by the graffiti. https://www.greatyarmouthmercury.co.uk/ ... ld-8650650

Here's one for radio enthusiasts not to be missed! Masses of radios, music boxes, 78s, reel-to-reel tape recorders, as well as loads of interesting books, magazines and collectables. The private collection of the late Pat Herbert, founder of the "Hurdy Gurdy Radio Museum" in Howth, to be sold on Tuesday 8th March at Oliver Usher's (Kells) Salerooms.

What's the deal with these deactivated weapons? I know you can't fire them but what does the local Garda make of them. Do they still need any from of approval from the local Garda station to hold. Would love to get a deactivated Bren Gun similar to the one in a previous auction listed here.

I'm pretty sure you're alright with them as long as you have a deactivation cert but I don't think that covers taking them out on the street where you're might come to the attention of the Emergency Response Unit or the Dog Unit!
