Anyone see the puff piece on RTE news yesterday about the new charging hub in Mullingar? Nice bit of free advertising for SSE yet nothing from inept RTE about how much charging would cost.

Somebody on the other site dug out a figure of 80 cent per kWh.

Now according to RTE:
"Each ultra-rapid bay has charging capabilities of up to 150 kilowatts (kW), sufficient to deliver 12.5 kms of range per minute of charging"

Based on that, if it's 80 cent per kWh, it's 120 euros for an hour or 2 euros per minute. 2 euros for 12.5 km = 16 euros for 100 km which is way more expensive than it would cost a typical diesel in fuel cost for the same distance. Absurd stuff.

Also in RTE's puff piece was a bit about the bays being suitably sized for commerical vehicles and HGVs. Yeah - that's not a cuthroat industry and operators will definitely want to run electric vehicles with less range and higher fuel costs (at public charging stations) than diesel equivalents.....

Irish water couldn't get a lease/hire plan on the electric vans for their foremen,as noone has any idea of what they'll be worth in 5 years time for depreciation

16 for 100km isn't feasible for vast majority of people (I was away down the country at weekend and done circa 600km for less than e40),but a cynic would suggest that is the establishment plan to put vehicle ownership beyond the reach of ordinary person, and make them reliant and compliant on the state,to quell anyone speaking out 🤔
