Buying a car from Hertz
I see Hertz are selling a Corolla Hybrid 2021, 19k kms, €25,795 .
That's a pretty good price.
A little digging shows its a Northern Ireland car first registered in 04/21. Assuming its clean and no weird noises and they can show some sort of service history (although I'd say that's unlikely if first service is 12 months???), and given it is certainly very competitively priced, is there any reason to reject it out of hand .
I'd welcome any comments, even those I don't want to hear
Cheers

Many, many, MANY years ago, I remember reading in one of the tabloids about an American lady hiring an Austin 1100 and driving it in 2nd gear from Edinburgh to London.Memento Mori wrote: ↑Mon Jan 10, 2022 9:01 pm If its a manual some yanks no doubt will have driven the hell out of it
Thankfully this one is an auto.

It would want to be a good bit cheaper than other similar models.
You know what the fastest car in the world is, it's a hire car. There's some truth in that. I've heard what family members have done to hire cars. All I'm saying is that we are glad they don't check for damage underneath....
Years ago, the parents called to a neighbor who was the manager at a large main dealer. They did hire cars and sold them off after a few months. The parents called to buy one and the manager said that he wouldn't sell specific ones to us. When pushed why he'd sell us the red one and not the blue one (both for sale) he wouldn't say.

Yeah, there's a little guy on my shoulder trying to get my attention, saying the same thing. I've tried to ignore him, and then you come along with a real-life example. There's about a 15-20% difference in very similar models. I could match the price by buying an older non-rental with higher mileage.
Do you reckon boy/girl-racers would be interested in a Corolla??? That is a serious question, because if I wanted to do doughnuts I'd rent a Porsche or Ferrari.
Re: Buying a car from Hertz
All I'm saying is that the brother hired a family wagon for his visit a few years ago. He lives in the Middle East and enjoys a bit off off-roading in the desert. Anyway, he was down in deep West Cork and he decided that there was a "track" that he wanted to go up. I believe there was a nice forest/view/something at the top. Half way up, the vehicle was properly beached in the lane. A local farmer with a tractor with a tow rope rescued the car. We power-washed off the mud (plenty throttle was used in an attempt to free it, as well as rocks/logs pushed under the wheels to get grip). It wasn't dropping any fluids and no visible damage that could be seen by a quick examination of the sides so we washed it and sent it back.

Also, that mileage seems high for a one year old hire car. That's almost 2,500 km a month. Given the lack of tourism, I'm wondering if that was hired to the Garda for a while. Some hire cars were given to the Garda for a while.

Well spotted. Hadn't considered that. Hmmm, well I'll take a test drive anyway. See how it feels/sounds.
