The Kittiwake Lightship saved - at last!
481-tonne ship lifted out of Dublin port will be restored and put on public display.
The Light Ship Kittiwake has been lifted from the Alexandra Basin West in Dublin Port to be fully restored and put on public display.
According to this Irish Times report: https://www.irishtimes.com/video/video/ ... c-display/
After lying neglected in Dublin Port for many years this is a very welcome development and let's hope it doesn't end up like the poor old "Guillemot .II." which was scrapped after being used as a maritime museum in Wexford.
It's also a relief for me as, after initially contacting Dublin Port etc. some years ago, I got sense and left them to it but always felt that I had abandoned the lightship to its fate. I can relax now and enjoy my own lightship which is preserved on my bookcase - a more manageable 1" long version!

What, someone in authority decides to do the sensible thing and attempt to preserve our non religious heritage!

I don't know, it's the Dublin Port Authority that owns the ship - or so it seems: https://www.irishtimes.com/ireland/dubl ... ownership/ I certainly hope so as Harry Crosbie was going to turn it into a freak show. It appears the clown has already removed the guts of the ship and wanted to cut a hole in the side of it to turn it into a bar.

Some info here on the light ships. I used to fish near where the Connibeg was situated past the Saltee Islands in Wexford, the skipper used to board it for some reason I can't remember and was good area for catching whiting. Anyone know what happened her / where did she end up ?

Coningbeg was the name of the station not the ship and a number of different vessels would have been stationed there. "Osprey" was one such and I think it still survives - I'll delve into my archives again.KHD wrote: ↑Mon Jan 02, 2023 9:37 pm Some info here on the light ships. The board below shows some of the stations and vessel allocation.
