Tara Mines closure another nail in IE's rail freight plans?
The 'temporary' closure of the Tara mines operation at Navan kicks away another leg of CIE/IE's shaky rail freight operation. Even if the mine reopens, it is near the end of its natural life and shows up the weakness of the rail freight sector being concentrated on just a few customers. https://www.irishtimes.com/business/202 ... -laid-off/

Irish Government got too reliant on treating the likes of Tara Mines as permanent industry, like Waterford Glass back in the day. Asahi in County Mayo was another example.
Sad day for the workers, but Ireland as an open economy is exposes like this particularly since Brexit too.

It is the largest Zinc mine in Europe. Ireland is one of the best places in the world for Zinc exploration

There are base costs that determine how your economy performs on a global stage. Focusing on the big locally determined costs:
Wages
Energy
Rents
Wages - an upwards limit applies due to access to the European wide labour market. A bottom applies due to the cost of living. Primarily accommodation costs. The sky high property market of the past 20 years is seriously damaging to industry. If your mortgage/rent was half and you were paid a bit less but had the same amount in your pocket what would it matter?
Energy - Co2/Greens et al pursuing high cost policies that are playing a big role in ballooning our costs. It is a global issue. Unless the west wakes up it will impoverish itself. It has stupidly followed loose trade policies with the likes of China so that it can outsource CO2 emissions while importing cheap goods. This trade off costs the outsourced jobs. Ireland is very lucky that it makes Intel chips. But the nature of Multinations can be transient.

Likes of this the government should nationalise and make semi state in vein of ESB / bord na mona
