Re: I like trains...
It's when you see a 'modern' diesel photograph like that you are reminded just how recent the closure of the Mallow/Waterford route was. Another short-sighted bit of penny pinching.

Why British Railways ended up the way they did. Dr Beecham has'nt much accountability
Re: I like trains...
Speaking of trains. Hourly services recommended between major cities. It far too good of an idea for it to actually happen

Real in depth report from RTE there. Incidentally, what does the reporter mean here: These include taking more trucks off the roads by building the Limerick to Foynes railway and starting the South Wexford Railway between Waterford and Rosslare Europort.Happy Days wrote: ↑Tue Jul 25, 2023 8:46 am Speaking of trains. Re: I like trains...
If businesses benefit more from railroads, there will be fewer trucks. But personally I doubt it will be more profitable.
Right now it's like this: load it on a truck, drive it to the destination point and unload it.
And if by rail: load it on a truck, take it to the railroad and load it on a wagon, take it to another city, load it on a truck again and take it to the destination point.
Would it be cheaper?
Hi all!

Ahhh, yes: 06 2023 - back in the days when we had lovely weather. I'm only a short drive from Interlaken at the moment (by continental standards) but the weekend's forecast for there is worse than for here, so I'll stick to Plan A and hope for at least one day of sunshine.

Hi Del, I'm doing a project and looking for images of the typical type of information signage one might of found knocking around a 'circa 1950's' Irish railway station. Ticket office, parcels, toilets . . that type of thing. I've been searching online for ages but not getting much inspiration. I'd really appreciate your input.

There's some signs on this page: https://www.lennan.eu/pa101b.htm which were fairly typical of those dating from the late 1920's (Great Southern Railways) which could still be seen everywhere into the 1980's/90s. I don't have those sort of items these days or even photographs. You could try asking for help on the Irish Railway Modeller Forum https://irishrailwaymodeller.com/ they are a helpful bunch and there's masses of photographs on their pages.

Thanks Del, that's a very helpful link. I hadn't thought of 'waiting room' and I'd also forgotten that there was nearly always an Irish/English translation on all the signage.Del.Monte wrote: ↑Thu Sep 07, 2023 8:45 pm There's some signs on this page: https://www.lennan.eu/pa101b.htm which were fairly typical of those dating from the late 1920's (Great Southern Railways) which could still be seen everywhere into the 1980's/90s. Nudder model railway related vid for you Del, but don't think Marks Model would "put the kettle on" for me. The second half of the video is more relevant.
Well, certainly not in Hawkins Street shop. Was in Marks Models in Cork, the fellas behind the counter there are really sound.

Moneymore a station on a line that closed in 1959 was visited by a Facebooker a few days ago, I'll see if I can dig up the link.Apelles wrote: ↑Thu Sep 07, 2023 8:25 pm Hi Del, I'm doing a project and looking for images of the typical type of information signage one might of found knocking around a 'circa 1950's' Irish railway station. Re: I like trains...
Thanks Gugleguy, im trying to find out what the phrasing or kind of subtle terminology used, for example when directing people to and from the platforms?
Might they be called northern line, or Dublin line or was it not mentioned at all?

Re: I like trains...
What other types of calligraphy or instructions to the general public would you have seen written on the walls and doors of a 1950s Irish railway station?

Here's a footbridge sign that was common - still see some of them about. http://eiretrains.com/Photo_Gallery/Rai ... _CC_JA.jpg

A living Train Station on an abandoned railway line - 1976 documentary. Prisoners from dartmoor were passengers too on this line - handcuffed as well.

Does anyone have any good Irish Rail toilet stories.
I was on a packed train to Galway one Friday (people standing everywhere) and there was a guy taking a dump with the toilet door wide open and having a conversation with people in the corridor.

I was on the train recently. Those circular doors where you enter, press the button on far wall and then stand like a gom as the door slides shut very gradually with all the packed-in standing passengers looking at you standing there looking back at them as you are excruciatingly slowly sealed into the smelly chamber of horrors.

Train and railway station toilets is a big enough topic for a separate thread.

Before the train had moved off the platform, some creature had taken a dump in the first class toilet. Then left the door open letting the aroma waft around the carriage.

Up until ten minutes ago I did not know this awesome piece of infrastructure existed. The Wuppertal Schwebebahn, built 122 years ago, over 8 miles of rail, used daily by 82,000 passengers.

Spare a thought - and perhaps a few bob - for the preservationists at the Downpatrick & Co.Down Railway who suffered extensive flood damage in the recent storm. The aerial views on the accompanying video show just how bad things were and the massive task involved in repairing the damage.

I suppose with Joe Duffy's impending paycut he will have to travel by train now, so maybe you could keep him company
