If businesses benefit more from railroads, there will be fewer trucks. But personally I doubt it will be more profitable.

Right now it's like this: load it on a truck, drive it to the destination point and unload it.

And if by rail: load it on a truck, take it to the railroad and load it on a wagon, take it to another city, load it on a truck again and take it to the destination point.

Would it be cheaper?

Hi Del, I'm doing a project and looking for images of the typical type of information signage one might of found knocking around a 'circa 1950's' Irish railway station. Ticket office, parcels, toilets . . that type of thing. I've been searching online for ages but not getting much inspiration. I'd really appreciate your input.

There's some signs on this page: https://www.lennan.eu/pa101b.htm which were fairly typical of those dating from the late 1920's (Great Southern Railways) which could still be seen everywhere into the 1980's/90s. I don't have those sort of items these days or even photographs. You could try asking for help on the Irish Railway Modeller Forum https://irishrailwaymodeller.com/ they are a helpful bunch and there's masses of photographs on their pages.

I was on a packed train to Galway one Friday (people standing everywhere) and there was a guy taking a dump with the toilet door wide open and having a conversation with people in the corridor.

I was on the train recently. Those circular doors where you enter, press the button on far wall and then stand like a gom as the door slides shut very gradually with all the packed-in standing passengers looking at you standing there looking back at them as you are excruciatingly slowly sealed into the smelly chamber of horrors.

Boarded First Class in Heuston Station Bound for Cork around 2010.

Before the train had moved off the platform, some creature had taken a dump in the first class toilet. Then left the door open letting the aroma waft around the carriage.

Up until ten minutes ago I did not know this awesome piece of infrastructure existed. The Wuppertal Schwebebahn, built 122 years ago, over 8 miles of rail, used daily by 82,000 passengers.

Spare a thought - and perhaps a few bob - for the preservationists at the Downpatrick & Co.Down Railway who suffered extensive flood damage in the recent storm. The aerial views on the accompanying video show just how bad things were and the massive task involved in repairing the damage.
