A thread to discuss insects.

Key times in my observation of all things nature during the year also involves various insects. I was out and about yesterday and noticed the arrival, or more accurately, the emergence phase, of the St Marks fly or Hawthorn fly. These are big black flies which have long black legs and are slow and appear clumsy in flight.

I love seeing them about the place as it reminds me that the native hawthorns will be starting to come into flower soon.

I was taking some old cans and jars from the garage the other day and noticed a spider falling to the ground. A quick inspection showed it had a fat round torso and was very like that false widow spider the media were talking about last year! I Hadn't time to take a photo so I let him into the grass and away. Don't like killing things generally.
