Re: Nature photos
That is something I have hardly seen at all this summer, a ladybird. They used to be all over the place a few years ago.
Re: Nature photos
I have not seen many butterflies until today. I must have seen at least 2 dozen of them throughout the day.
Nothing at all up until this. And all of them red admirals

Re: Nature photos
Have heard the same from several people across (vaguely) north-western Europe. Weird summer weather must have put the brakes on an earlier part of the life cycle and pushing them all to emerge now from their pupae at the same time.

Re: Nature photos
Lock up your chickens and children !!!
But not on account of this guy (sure, he can't even get himself admitted into the snake family):
Pretty late to be seeing my first one of the year, and quite a surprise to see a whole one as they have an annoying habit of not skidaddling out of the way of the strimmer, so I'd often only see half a one (and it's not like they actually live up to their "slow" name, either - they can really make a run for it when they want to, legs or no legs).
Anyway, I'd just finished making a new pathway up the back end of the vegetable garden this evening, had put everything away and was admiring my handiwork when I spotted what I thought was a bit of a stick lying across the path. Went to pick it up and thought .... woah, where's me camera?!
In the house of course. Raced down the garden (the long way, so as not to frighten yer man), grabbed the camera, raced back up till I got to within about ten metres of where he was, then slowed down and kept an eye on my shadow. He'd done a u-turn, but was still in the same place. Did another u-turn as I was watching him (seemed to be trying to understand the new lie of the land) then slithered into the back corner of one of the herb beds.

Re: Nature photos
They blend in so well, in fact I remember almost stepping on one once as I was walking across a field. She did a noisy take off right in front of me and nearly gave me a heart attack
There are two in the picture NC aren't there, or do my eyes decieve me?

Re: Nature photos

Re: Nature photos
Yeah there's three of them. They look like they been released by a local gun club. I don't think their chances of survival are great. They are like stock trout being released into a fishery. Basically brought up and fed so they are on a steep learning curve being released. A handful will be lucky and make it till next year I suppose.
Re: Nature photos
I'd say the foxes get alot of them too plover. Would buzzards have a go at them I wonder ?
Re: Nature photos
The ladybirds are on the move. Away from my chainsaw. I've been making sure they keep a safe distance.

Re: Nature photos
Stand by for a load of insect photos (after dinner ... or maybe tomorrow)
But today's big news: Little Fwoggy's got a Littler Fwend
Chillin' in the pool yesterday evening ...
... and coming to say hello today
Haven't yet figured out what species Fwend is, but that makes it three different frog species I've seen in the garden in the last week or so.

Re: Nature photos
Dragon flies were out in force over the last few days.
Brace for impact!
Several different coloured bodies - blues, greens, browns, reds ...
They have the weirdest looking heads on them. And what exactly are they doing when they're perched on these high points?

One Hungry Caterpillar ... eating my dill seeds.
Can't be entirely sure that it was the same one I'd seen the day before, but if so, it became considerably greener over the course of 24 hours.

Re: Nature photos
Jimminy Cricket ...!
Tactical mowing of the orchard bearing fruit ( ) and giving me a comfortable "sit and stare" spot surrounded on two-and-a-half sides by unkempt grassland. Getting shots of these lads needs a lot of patience, as they hang out at a level in the grass that's very "busy" with stems and leaves and seed-heads in the foreground.
Enough with the photos already ...
A side-effect of sitting quietly, waiting for clear shots, was being able to watch (and listen to) these guys communicating with each other. It's really easy to see them doing the leg-scratch thing - though hard to reconcile the volume of noise with such a tiny structure- but particularly impressive to hear how they each take their turn in a series of chk-chk-chk-chk-chks sweeping across a metre or two of vegetation.

Re: Nature photos
Got really excited about this fellow today, but jeeez it was tough to get a decent pic. There were two of them, and I don't know if they were courting, fighting, or just acting the eejit together in the breeze, but they were tearing around like lunatics.
Peacock butterflies are colourful, but this pattern is so much classier in my opinion! Not sure I'd sign off on the bit of colour around the tail, but ...
... it does have a nice delicate spiral effect, when seen from the right angle. This is the second individual (little bits nibbled out of one wing)
Getting in deep.
