They could be, indeed. :geek:

Image

Each "creature" was still attached this morning to the same rush as yesterday evening, so I was pretty sure they were empty exoskeletons. Getting up close, and with the sunlight coming from behind, one could see that there was no body inside, and with a bit of contortion, I could just about see the back of a couple where there's a great hole through which the adult would have emerged.

Image

My frogs might well have feasted on the adults as they appeared; but the spiders are recycling the empty shells!

This is the first time I've seen real-life evidence of this stage of metamorphosis, and I think I can confirm that I currently have a healthy population of grasshoppers, sorry: great green bush cricket! This might also be why I don't have Colorado beetles on my potatoes.

Reminds me I must dig up some bull rushes for my own pond / ditch. Do I just plant the roots in the water CR or in the clay along the bank? These are Bullrushes. Tried dispensing the seed from a bullrush head last year but has been a complete failure.

I simply gouged them out of their original location with the digger, trying - and failing - to keep a decent root ball around each clump. Afterwards, I took as much of the shoot-root-and-ball ensemble as would hold together and dropped it into the pond, close enough to the bank for the shoots to be able to rest on the slope, but far enough in for the roots to be completely covered by the water. Repeat fifteen or twenty times.

Th'internet says the best time to transplant the mat of roots is "late spring". I'll have to check my other posts here to know for sure, but I think I did it in June.

The weight of my heavy clay soil was enough to keep all but one of the clumps sufficiently underwater. That odd one got a rock dropped on it and it's growing fine now. And the rock has been recovered for alternative use.

Sunflowers are about 40% in bloom. Loads of bees on them.

Gorgeous sunflowers, they look amazing.

Here's my little newt from yesterday. I thought he was a lizard but my youngest son is sick to death of the newt/lizard arguments we have every year and he just drily responded to my "video of a lizard" (can't share here) which I shared with kids, with one firm unshakable word - Newt.

As is so often the case, the child is correct. That is unquestionably a newt! You need have no fear of him attempting to take over your world. :D

A couple of creatures from yesterday's strolling, one from me, one from son, both in different places on west coast. A compass jellyfish and a sail by the wind. The original images are a lot sharper and the colours are brilliant.

In the 19th Century, British horticulturalists who were incentivised by the booming opium trade attempted to establish an opium poppy crop in the UK. Unfortunately for them, it was eaten by a plague of hares.

Hard to make out photo due to resize but it's a Bigfoot moment so it's appropriate. It appears that Maxwell is actually two hares!!!

Still from a little video taken just now from my hammock. I have twins! 😊

This time of the year hares and bunnies gatger together in the woodlands of Ireland to feast on magic mushrooms. They look stoned I'd walk backwards very slowly incase they think your a big shroom Isha.

We already know at least one of our Maxis is an inveterate stoner, always eating poppies.
But I had been saying recently that I thought Maxwell had a split personality because sometimes s/he is really happy and calm and let's you come up very close and other times s/he does constant mad jumping and is skittish.
This solves the conundrum. There are two and one is a complete loodelah. 😍

Visited Mullaghmeen forest yesterday on way home from Lough Crew. Largest planted beech wood in Ireland. Very nice to wander off the paths and right now there are lots of different mushrooms to be seen.

Ah here, ya photoshopped in all those shamrocks, didn't ya?!

I must say I really like the way your camera has picked out the texture in the background of all those pics, especially the "porcini" one. I have a variety of delicious looking 'shrooms in my garden at the moment, but I'm wary of relying on some very old memories of what's edible and what's not. I miss having "the book" around: it was borrowed - repeatedly - from the mobile library, until the library became immobile and stopped coming. I could never find a copy of "the book" again, nor one with as much precise, step-by-step detail.

The mushroom photos were taken by my sons, they both have iPhone 13Pro cameras. I'm so jealous of the cameras on their phones. There are ways to rent buy the phones and I'm considering it for somewhat future me. You would not believe the beautiful videos they get. The oldest son is a self taught expert on mushrooms and is obsessed by them.

I took the picture of the forest.

Yikes, I just had a look at that iPhone 13 Pro on Amazon. It's almost £1k before VAT or whatever it is that the UK are adding on to stuff sent to Ireland! I'll add it to my shopping list that includes a country mansion and a private island.

Yebbut : it's an iPhone and Pro - comes with a cast-iron guarantee you'll get spectacular results, even if you don't know what you're doing! Just think how much you'll save on that degree course in applied photography you were thinking of signing up for.

Huge amount of berries on the Holly trees around here.

And a parrot wax cap from the son's collection this week.
