Tom Hardy (Programming Manager, Consultant and Presenter) RIP

The former PD of Today FM, Tom Hardy (real name Brian Johnson), sadly passed away on Wednesday evening. He was PD of Today FM from August 1998 to January 2013. Tom had extensive experience both in front of and behind the microphone. He started with college radio and then was a presenter on offshore pirates The Voice of Peace and Radio Caroline. His first involvement in Irish radio was with Dublin superpirate Sunshine Radio (which is where I heard him first), followed by Radio Nova. After a stint on legal radio with British station Chiltern Radio, Tom came back to Ireland to get involved with Monaghan Town's own superpirate Kiss FM, both as a presenter and as assistant controller. Tom was one of the original presenters on Dublin's 98FM and, while he was with them, was involved with the launch of another Denis O'Brien-owned station in Prague using the Classic Hits formula of 98FM at the time. After that, he was involved behind the scenes in various stations in the UK and Scandanavia before arriving at Today FM. Tom's extensive experience is largely covered on Linkedin, which includes programming consultant, work for the Public Relations Institute of Ireland and PPI Awards board member.

Tom Hardy had a great radio voice. It has been argued by some that Today FM's best period was when he was the PD. RIP Tom.

Here is a tribute to him:
