RTÉ closing Longwave 252 April 14th citing 'Mast no longer fit for purpose'
RTÉ closing Longwave 252 April 14th citing 'Mast no longer fit for purpose'
RTE can't afford to maintain the mast.
Why don't I care.
A more plausible reason is that Longwave 252 doesn't do anything in the propagation of the Cult of Personality which all things RTE. television and radio is geared for.

Info about the mast in question. I had seen it a few times in the distance when driving from Kilcock to Trim.

I lived in Kilcock in the 90s. On the phone box in the square you could hear Atlantic 252 for a split second before you got a dial tone. There were reports of garage door motors, fridges and other electrics humming to the beat of the music, I witnessed the fridge at my cousin's house doing this.

The long disused MW mast (290 metres) near Tullamore is still standing as per a post on boards yesterday. There was a tendering process for its removal some time ago but still there.

How many people actually listen to RTE Radio One on Long Wave these days? This is about the third attempt at closing down this transmitter. There were protests previously about the effects that it would have on the older Irish diaspora in the UK and the date was postponed. There are a number of ways of picking RTE Radio One now, whether on FM (around Ireland), various tv platforms or online. Also, older people are more technology savvie these days and most have a smartphone and/or know someone that can help them - thinking of the much vaunted "Irish diaspora".

Normal programming stopped this morning at 00:04 and then was followed by a loop with O'Donnell Abu and a message detailing the different ways to get Radio 1.

In about half of Co Antrim it's a lost cause.

Half of Antrim has been a lost cause for a long time now and for lots of other reasons. Whoop, whoop.Persona Non Grata wrote: ↑Sun Jun 18, 2023 3:46 pm Around most of Ireland.

The mast was demolished this morning, only a couple of days after the old MW came down.
