Netflix clamps down on user access. You must be in the same building. The YouTube video creator's swearing is apt for this

Seems utterly counterproductive. Think They'll be changing tack pretty soon

Going to be interesting given that IP address location is not quite as precise in Ireland as it is in the US. It would not be unusual for some subscribers to have more than one ISP. The resolution on some IP databases is quite crude and will barely give the location of the ISP's HQ. Others will have seriously aged data. (Wonderful GDPR and assorted f*ckwittery). Some ISPs will reuse IP addresses but due to takeovers and acquisitions, the reverse DNS name for the IP address will still have the name of the older ISP (Indigo is a good example with Eir IPs).

Where do they think the people they knock off will go? Can't see them rushing to get their own subscriptions when there are so many to choose from and let's face it, Netflix is not that great, really.

Think that Netflix pulled the announcement.

It is always a problem with Pay TV services even with dodgy boxes and pirate smartcards before it. The theory on which dodgy boxes operate predates the pirate smartcards by a few years. Let's just say that I have a very particular set of skills.

The services want to turn these people into subscribers. Even when sharing subscriptions they are still theoretically paying customers. It would require a bit of analysis of viewing habits to determine which is a family household, which is an apartment subscription, which is a student subscription and which is a bunch of people sharing a subscription. They would all have their own characteristics. Then there are holiday homes and visits to family to consider. Netflix has a lot of data on which it can base some detection algorithms. It also has subscription payment data. There are also browser or app and device characteristics that can be used.

For Techies, it is simultaneously horrifying in terms of the depth of the data and really cool in terms of its possibilities. Because people generally rely on the wibbling on non-Technologist "technology journalists" in the non-specialist media, they are almost completely unaware of the amount of data that they generate when they are online.

IP addresses on their own are a very crude appoach. Some people may use VPNs to try disguising their location but they are immediately flagged as iffy because most of them are using IP addresses from data centres. There are also providers for lists of VPN and data centre IP address ranges which services use for fraud prevention. Non-business ISP subscribers are not typically be assigned a static IP address so they will, over a period of a few days or weeks, change their IP address as a new dynamic IP address is assigned.
