Depends on your standpoint. Sean Connery is way out in front and created his own (Cubby Broccoli) style of Bond but if you have read all the books then Daniel Craig seems a far better fit for Ian Fleming's Bond.

I do love Bond for the really cringe worthy innuendo

The World Is Not Enough (1999)
James Bond : [in bed with Jones] I was wrong about you.
Dr. Christmas Jones : Yeah? How so?
James Bond : I thought Christmas only comes once a year.

Moonraker (1979)
Sir Frederick Gray, Minister of Defence : My God, what's Bond doing?
Q : I think he's attempting re-entry, sir.

Die Another Day (2002)
Verity : I see you handle your weapon well.
James Bond : I have been known to keep my tip up.

I do really like the Craig ones but really, looking back they’re nearly all enjoyable apart from Moore. He used to be my favourite as a kid too.

Yeah. Craig's Bond is definitely the closest to Fleming's Bond that we've seen on the screen IMO. In personality only though.

Physically I don't think anyone really matched the descriptions of Bond in the books but I suppose Connery would be closest.

I suppose my favourites would be Connery and Craig in that order. It helps Connery's record that he never got given a turkey of a script.

Bond movies are a relic from the 1960/80's and should have been dropped when Roger Moore was replaced. Pierce Brosnan was beyond woeful.

Favourite Bond: Sean Connery. Second Favourite: Roger Moore. Least Favourite: George Lazenby (on the strength of one film: On Her Majesty's Secret Service!).

Favourite Movie: Live and Let Die, with Roger Moore. Second Favourite is more difficult: Toss-up between Goldfinger, From Russia with Love, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice and Skyfall - all of them Sean Connery, except for the last which is Daniel Craig! Worst Movie: Either- On Her Majesty's Secret Service or Enough is Enough. Best Timothy Dalton - can't really choose between The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill, but both are good. Best Pearse Brosnan: Goldeneye.

Best Villain: Goldfinger from the film of the same name.

Memorable Film Theme Songs (could not pick a specific favourite): Goldfinger, Live and Let Die, The Man with the Golden Gun, A View to a Kill, License to Kill, The Living Daylights and Skyfall.

My favorite was Moore in the day. I think the gadgets were better.

I like most of them though.

Sean Connery for me.

I think Pierce Brosnan had the best of the bond girls.

Casino Royale is the greatest Bond film. Most intense, plot was tight, Eva Green was the perfect love interest, fantastic villain, excellent theme tune, and one of the best opening scene chases I've ever seen.

No-one spotted the "deliberate" mistake! It should have been The World is Not Enough!

James Bond: But of course you are.

James Bond: No. I’m just looking.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service

I was watching a Clive Owen film earlier and was wondering why he never got the Bond gig instead of Daniel Craig.
The showbiz rumours at the time were that he had it in the bag, it was a done deal, then Craig seemed to just come out of nowhere and nab it.
I would have liked to have seen Owen have a crack at a Bond film, I think he would have made a good 007.

Roger Moore has always been my favourite Bond but I think part of that is because his portrayal was the first one I'd ever seen. I have vivid memories of being around 5 or 6 and being allowed to stay up late on a Saturday night to watch The Man With The Golden Gun on RTE1.

He is pure ham and cheese but really enjoyable ham and cheese. His interactions with Q used to crack me up and his gadgets were awesome.

Second favourite is Dalton and my favourite Bond movie is Licence to Kill, it completely threw away the innuendo laden formula and had a really hard edge to it. Sanchez was a proper bad guy too.

So who would have been and/or would be a good choice for playing James Bond?

From the current crop Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender could give it a good lash. Fassbender would probably be the better of the two if you want a more suave Bond, Hardy for more macho.
It all depends if Craig ever steps aside though, I think he only said he would quit because he wanted a raise.

As Uncle Frank mentioned a few posts back (and a few weeks back!), Clive Owen might have been a good choice some years ago. Another good choice rather ironically, might have been Raiph Fiennes: ironic because his character in the recent James Bond films ended up being "M"!

It's official - No Time to Die is the last Daniel Craig Bond film. At 15 years (or 14 years, if you allow for the fact that it was ready for release last year before the pandemic put paid to that), he played James Bond for longer than any of the previous actors. In that time, he played him a relatively modest five times. This compares with seven for Roger Moore and six official films for Sean Connery (there was a seventh unofficial one called Never Say Never Again).

But a big fan of the theme music. And the best were...

Live and Let Die - Paul MacCartney and Wings
Licence to Kill - Gladys Knight
View to a Kill - Duran Duran
You Only Live Twice - Nancy Sinatra
Good shout, classics one and all.

A few extras, for my part:

Goldfinger - Shirley Bassey
OHMSS - "We Have All The Time In The World" - Louis Armstrong
Goldeneye - Tina Turner

Michael Fassbender is very sexy but he has a bit of a look of the dissolute about him. Hardy is almost too handsome to be looking at for long, could burn your eyes 😊. Hmmmm, choices choices.
