Fry ups.

#1

Post by Mr Daniel F. O'Leary »

Like most other people in Ireland, I love a good fry up.
However, what does and doesn't go into one is one of the most polarising things you can discuss in Ireland.

I went out for one this morning (we have a tradition where we go out for breakfast on Christmas Eve) and while I did enjoy it, there's many things that others would consider heretical to put on a fry, as you can see in the image below.

In your opinion, what does and doesn't belong on a fry up?

Bacon, eggs, sausages, potato bread.

I sincerely hope that is bacon hidden behind the bread in that pic?

Neither is the fry itself, considering the amount of salt in it!

It's not really that much of a stretch considering fried potato products like Boxty, Potato Farls and Fried Cubed potatoes are a staple on many fry ups. It's also easier for restaurants/cafés to do it, because then they don't have to use a proprietary food product for their fry's.

Having said that though, you will never see someone add chips at home, mostly because it isn't a favourite item in fry ups for most people.

Vegetarian here but I just recently discovered no meat white pudding. Clonakilty make one which is very nice, but I think Denny's version wins. It's yummy. Add fried eggs, mushrooms, potato bread, and ....I just noticed! Where are your lightly fried tomatoes, friend! 😮

I didn't think there was ever much meat in black pudding anyway.

Fried tomatoes - the curse of the devil. I've lost count of how many times I've burnt my mouth on fried tomatoes. You bite into them and a squirt of volcanic magma gets the inside of your mouth.

Eggs, Bacon, Sausages, toast with real butter, coffee.
Can take or leave the pudding.

Will not eat beans, mushrooms or tomatoes with a fry up.

It's underneath the toast, next to the puddings but it's definitely not very clear.

Perfect. Pay no mind to those doing down fried tomatoes. They are almost my favourite part of a fry up.😊

That's just typical of the tomatoes, hiding under the insulating toast and staying hot ready the catch you out and burn your mouth.

I think you deserve a jam tartlet straight out of the oven for this kind of attitude.

The worst part about jam from a tart is that it sticks and burns your palate.

I'll take all that, exactly as it is. No complaints from me about any of the "optional extras" as 'tis rare enough that I get even the basics, living in a country where a traditional breakfast is bread and milk (or variations on the theme).

You can drop the two puddings from my fry too - horrible stuff. I haven't had a fried egg since I chucked out the frying pan about ten years ago - used to love a fried egg sandwich - a poached egg sandwich is a poor substitute.
