I'd never heard of Scaltheen before, and wouldn't normally be a whiskey drinker apart from a hot whiskey when I'm dying of a cold, but just sounds interesting to try! Simple enough to make too, so I'm planning on giving it a go at the weekend. Just wondering has anyone else heard of or tried it before?Accounts of the club's meetings claim that members drank "scaltheen", a mixture of whiskey and hot butter, and that they left a chair vacant at each gathering for the Devil.
Recipe I found on Broadsheet.ie
ScaltheenHeat the butter in a pan until melted and add the sugar, stir until its frothy and bubbling.
- 25 grams of salted butter
- 3 Tbsp of brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp of ground pepper
- 100mls hot water
- 60ml of Tullamore Dew whiskey
Add the pepper and let it cook for a few seconds. Then stir in the hot water.
Leave to bubble for a minute and then take it off the heat and stir in the whiskey.
Serves two large shots.
