Scaltheen

Post by nimrod86 »

Reading up there about the Hellfire Club (as you do at 05:30) and it mentioned that back in the day members drank a drink called "Scaltheen"
Accounts of the club's meetings claim that members drank "scaltheen", a mixture of whiskey and hot butter, and that they left a chair vacant at each gathering for the Devil.
I'd never heard of Scaltheen before, and wouldn't normally be a whiskey drinker apart from a hot whiskey when I'm dying of a cold, but just sounds interesting to try! Simple enough to make too, so I'm planning on giving it a go at the weekend. Just wondering has anyone else heard of or tried it before?

Recipe I found on Broadsheet.ie
Scaltheen
  • 25 grams of salted butter
  • 3 Tbsp of brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp of ground pepper
  • 100mls hot water
  • 60ml of Tullamore Dew whiskey
Heat the butter in a pan until melted and add the sugar, stir until its frothy and bubbling.
Add the pepper and let it cook for a few seconds. Then stir in the hot water.
Leave to bubble for a minute and then take it off the heat and stir in the whiskey.
Serves two large shots.

sounds fairly similar to Hot Buttered Rum, which I make at Xmas.

I use some cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and a clove in my recipe too

based on this recipe
