Re: The rusty tool and machinery thread.
LOL hopefully if I say not fish I won't put you off too far.
Re: The rusty tool and machinery thread.
I'll rephrase that fish isn't the first word that comes to mind.

Thought of that too....CO seems to suggest a watery environment. Dyke maintenance maybe?

I was pacing the kitchen wondering what the fck could you harvest in a river that was not a fish but was a fish haha
Re: The rusty tool and machinery thread.
So here's another. I'll be honest and say I've never seen one in the South and the picture comes from a NI museum. At least it is 100% farming this time.

I was beginning to think strings of mussels or something, before we got to "river"

Making rope out of baling twine ? My uncle in Galway I remember I seen him do this but wasn't that tool. But it's Defford something for twisting something.
Re: The rusty tool and machinery thread.
On dry land this time. I've even got a picture for the reveal that shows kids in Killarney learning how to use it, was worried for a bit it might not have been used in Ireland.

I was thinking Pearl mussels were widespread in all rivers years ago and people used to eat themOsciiboscii wrote: ↑Sun Sep 12, 2021 12:07 pm I was beginning to think strings of mussels or something, before we got to "river"
Re: The rusty tool and machinery thread.
Yes but not from bailing twine something we had lots of before plastics.
Re: The rusty tool and machinery thread.
That's a great job, never knew anything like that existed. Might send on to the brother to see if he can make one for the craic.
Re: The rusty tool and machinery thread.
Here's a nice old antique probably cost you a fortune to buy to put logs in by your fire but it had a specific use, agricultural if not farming, but probably not found on many farms. I had to pick this view as they normally state the name I'm looking for on the side. More rustic ones without all the metal hoops would have been in much more common use.
Tangentially related to something mentioned in this thread but not eels.

Anyone know what this is for ? Belonged to a friend of mines grandfather but he hadn't a clue what he used it for. Was thinking it was some sort of hand weeder.
