Again, it's only a fiver, yes I know a 'tv dinner's from the same shop is €4.

Cheap and cheerful vino.

(CR wonders if he should mention that he bought two (full!) bottles off the non-bargain shelf last week for less than 5€ total ... )

:? Ooof, CR doesn't wonder any more.

Tesco are ripping you off bigtime - £1.79 (=2.09€) from the Calais Wine Superstore.

It's not Tesco, it's the tax man. €3.18 excise duty on a 750ml bottle of wine plus 23% vat on that is €3.91. The highest in EU.

So of your €5 bottle, Tesco are only getting €1.09. The gov are getting the rest.

Almost €12+VAT on a bottle of whiskey.

This is something that I just dont get
I mean, the southern European countries have low low tax on alcohol yet so far as I can fathom their populations have less of an issue with excessive consumption than countries with hi hi booze tax.
Why not try lowering the Irish booze tax to, say, Spanish rates ?

Alcoholics that I have known were never deterred by the price of their fix
