Currently listening to for a second time while I type this - Igor Stravinsky: Firebird (Finale) Pierre Boulez / Wiener Philharmoniker

Beautiful piece of music ( in my mind's eye that is )

I used to be a big fan of classical music not being exposed to pop music until I was 13 or so but don't listen to much of it any more. One of my favourite pieces still is "In the Hall of the Mountain King" by Grieg but it's too short!! Classical music 'flash mob' performances are my current favourite way of watching/listening to the genre and there's some great stuff out there...

Ravel's 'Bolero', introduced to a whole new audience in the 1979 movie "10", is another favourite of mine and this flash mob version is fab.

Another classical work that I love is the Jon Lord (Deep Purple) "Concerto For Group And Orchestra" performed in 1969 with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. The album is an acquired taste and displeased many classical and rock fans at the time. Apparently the classically trained Jon Lord later regretted the experiment but returned to it in 1999 and if you want more here's a link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concerto_ ... _Orchestra

Another one on the Classical Guitar by Tárrega, although one of his lesser known works - Tango.

A fantastic piece of music, imo.

The Doors - Unknown Soldier, performed by Nigel Kennedy ( I haven't heard the Doors version yet, but had this in my music collection a good few years and only found out while looking for it on youtube that it was an album he brought out with the Doors songs... I thought it was some old composer that done this ! ) Beautiful piece of music.

His reworking of Vivaldi's Four Seasons is brilliant and well worth a listen.

Gustav Holst - The Planets.

I could be lacking slept but the first few minutes of this piece is similar, or maybe the right way of putting it is the opening riffs in Diamond Head's Am I Evil ( a song covered later by Metallica) seems to be influenced by this piece.

Paganini violin concerto NO. 1 1st movement. Maria Duenas is the violin virtuoso who shreds this to pieces.

Another adagio, Tomaso Albinoni - Adagio in G Minor.

Also included is an adaptation of aforementioned adagio into an instrumental by guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen... the recording is not great.

I initially had a really good version of Danse Macabre performed by a young Polish orchestra but unfortunately the channel won't let it be linked to external websites. Anyway, I love the intro to Prokofiev's Dance of the knights... best listened to with the volume up. I thought with that program The Apprentice, it would turn me off this piece of music. Thankfully it didn't. With all music I'm always careful not to listen to the likes of The Voice and all them type of Karaoke shows... for the simple reason is that they turn me off songs I liked with the singing style they use which to me completely butchers the song being attempted and pollutes the version that my mind has already resident in my brain.

Theme from "The Onedin Line" well, that's what I always relate it to - great music for a great TV series.

Gabriel Fauré - Piano Quartet No.2 in G minor, Op.45 - 3. Adagio non troppo

One of these compositions that tells me its time to hit the hay and get some shut eye.
