The sad news came through on the 26th May (3 days ago) that Andrew Fletcher ("Fletch"), keyboardist with Depeche Mode, had passed away. He was the tall red-haired bespectacled guy, usually in the background. Andrew had been in bands with fellow original members Vince Clarke and Martin Gore, before singer Dave Gahan arrived and Depeche Mode was born. Andrew was the only member over the years not to have a song writing credit. (Former member Alan Wilder, who replaced Vince Clarke, had some writing credits.) He contributed some backing vocals, but eventually stopped that too in live contexts. Andrew looked after some of the band management aspects and also acted as a spokesperson. Andrew's side lines included deejaying and setting up a record label - Toast Hawaii.
It's hard to know if Depeche Mode will continue with his demise, given his constant presence along with the other two remaining original members Dave Gahan and Martin Gore since its formation in 1980.
