Was listening to Elliott Smith's version of the Beatles song "Because" Beautifully done. Anyone else got any cover songs that as good or even better than the original artist's rendition ?

Always a big David Cassidy + The Partridge Family fan when I was a kid and his 1974 cover of the Beatles "Please Please Me" was way better than the original,

I've no idea who the player is other than the YouTube name of Acoustic Labs.

Michael Nyman's The Promise. It transcribed well from piano to acoustic guitar.

Muse - Feeling Good
Johnny Cash - Personal Jesus (massive DM fan me but that is streets ahead of the original)
Westlife - You Lift Me Up - gives a gravitas I never thought they had in them!!
Eric Clapton - Cocaine

Two Examples from the Madchester scene in Britain, which lasted from the late 80s to the the early 90s until it was replaced by Britpop in the charts.

Step On by the Happy Mondays was actually a cover of a song by John Kongos which was originally released in 1971. The Happy Mondays version was released in 1990.

In the same year, the Soup Dragon's released a song called I'm Free, which was originally a Rolling Stones song from the 60s.

Obviously, quite different from the source material both of them, but good music nonetheless.

That John Kongos track is fab I remember it from way back ,,,,very unusual, even by the quirky standards of the 1970s.

I was going to give a Thanks, but I couldn't because of the inclusion of that Westlife track! Johnny Cash's and Eric Clapton's covers are great, while Muse's is tolerable. We won't say any more about the other! :)

Step On and I'm Free were regulars at every student disco all through 1990.

Here's a few favourite covers of mine

Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. 1979 original by Robert Hazard is good but a female singer has a better impact.

Elton John - Pinball Wizard. Outdoes The Who original

Pat Boone - Song To The Siren. This was released before the Tim Buckley original.

Heart - Alone. Top 80s power ballad. Had been recorded twice before by i-Ten and John Stamos - not a batch on the Wilson sisters.

Morrissey - Only A Pawn In Their Game. From his covers LP California Son - great choices.

Not exactly a cover but interpolates a Simply Red song heavily:

Discovered this was on my phone somehow.

Probably because it's on an Orb - Back to Mine mix CD
