Yeah it's looking bad alright for the next week, could be very cold too. Both the ECMWF and GFS seem to be showing an improvement around a week from now, this is not accurate of course and will change but let's hope for the best

What a cracker of a day to start May, nice day to enjoy the bank holiday outdoors. Everyone in mighty form can’t beat it.

I dont find it cold here and we're near the Shannon which can be windy. My wife finds it a bit chilly in the evenings and gets me to light a log fire in the stove . . Thats okay as I really love the warm glow and sweet aroma of a lit timber fire.

I have the fire lit here ...

Although it's more for the benefit of the aged parents, I will admit that I don't object to a bit of man-made warmth when Mother Nature has decided to turn the thermostat down to 5° overnight.

But I'm not complaining, because I'd rather have cold-n-dry than the five days of on/off torrential rain that was previously forecast for this week.

Hardly any rain for days and heading into a prolonged dry spell but absolutely no government suggestions about conserving water. Much better to wait until we hit a crisis or is it just me being alarmist again?

Our lack of investment in water infrastructure is scandalous. With the amount of rain this country experiences yearly we should rarely find ourselves facing water shortages.

There are so many things that could be done with minimum investment such as banging home the message to cut down on water wastage - put out on the State owned broadcasting media. How many people have cut down on the amount of water that their toilets use with each flush - it costs nothing more than inserting a brick or plastic bottle of water into the cistern. I did it ages ago and multiplied by the number of flushes in a year the saving of treated drinking water must be enormous - multiply that by a significant percentage of the population adopting the idea and .....However, our wonderful Green Party are more interested in greenways, social engineering, and virtue signalling rather than doing something simple - no sexy photo opportunity in putting a brick in your cistern.

Yer a bit behind the times with the brick-in-the-cistern idea, Del. It was a good and effective strategy in the olden days when cisterns were high and huge; and still reasonably effective when they came down in the world but were still huge. However, modern cisterns already function at the limit of what volume is needed for an efficient flush, so adding a brick only makes it more likely you'll need to flush a second time to shift stubborn waste.

Far more useful is (a) making sure you have a flush system that allows you to choose a half (3l) or whole (6l) flush, according to the waste to be eliminated; and (b) not flushing! There's really no reason to adding several litres of water to a bladder-full of urine for the fun of it, especially when you could put it to better use in the compost heap.

Modern cisterns Lol! I live in a Victorian townhouse in an advanced state of decrepitude and as for peeing on the compost heap.......
I suspect that a huge majority of houses in the Republic still have older cisterns that a brick/bottle should be applied to and the old maxim - "if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down" is also good to remember.

In the last couple of days vague rumblings about impending water shortages and its affect on farmers but nothing from the government. The media much more concentrated on trivia about sea swimming and people enjoying the 'good' weather......we have officially entered a drought situation and nobody in authority seems to have noticed.

Over in the NW we have had higher temperatures than the rest of the country and a solid month with zero precipitation. I love the great weather and hope to continue with a great summer but even so we could do with (night time) rain as everything is looking dry.

So, even Met Eireann have woken up, at last, and are now putting it out that we are now in 'an absolute drought ' i.e more than 15 consecutive days with no rain. https://www.independent.ie/weather/weat ... 37794.html

Still no government guidance.....
