Noo Awlins - and now for high heat and humidty :-/

Visiting New Orleans back in 2018, I was struck by how much residual damage was still evident after Katrina's passage in 2005. Looking at the footage from the city today, I recognise many of the locations (I did a lot of off-tourist-trail walking) that have been trashed by the wind. Now, the remaining people there have been warned to expect temperatures in the mid to high 30°s this coming week, with intense humidity as a result of all the water; and no power to run their fridges, fans or air-con. Pretty grim. We really have it easy over here, despite the odd flood event or heatwave.

It seems as if the remnants of Ida has caused a lot of flooding damage in New York with 8/9 fatalities. Incredible that it still holds much of its power overland - and that far north of Louisiana!!

Was watching that in the early hours. Ten days ago, NY recorded a once-in-25-years deluge ; yesterday - so only ten days later - they top that with a once-in-200-years deluge. :o

The most remarkable thing - in a worrying sense - is how poor their modern infrastructure is at coping with that kind of weather. Not sure it'd be much better in other cities that might be exposed to torrential downpours, like many of those on the western shores of Europe.

Ah here, this is just mad now. Just heard that some folks in New Orleans are spending hours queuing up to buy petrol so they can run their car's air-con and have a cool place to spend the day.

That's seriously messed up. These are people who have houses still standing - but without electricity those houses become uninhabitable in times of high heat and humidity (= perfectly normal for the geographical area). So their quick fix is to burn fossil fuels to keep a tin can cool ... Jeeeez.

Have just been reading on a special interest forum the account by one of the US members who has lost just about everything in the "after-Ida" floods. His business (cinema sound engineer) is more or less destroyed, as the vast majority of his material - collected over 15 years - is insured only for its monetary value, which is nominal. The worst of it, as he sees it, is that the flooding in his area hasn't warranted any mention on the news, or any attention from the state or federal authorities - he (and his neighbours) are being left to pick up the pieces of their lives and businesses on their own. Says he can't even get hold of a car, because everything with a working engine has already been sold to a higher bidder. :(
