Here in the sunny southeast, it has been anything but. Of the last two bank holiday weekends, one was a total washout and the other was polar, but the thing that has stood out for me is the wind. I have never known it to be so windy at this time of year, even as I write this I'm looking at, what appears to be a birch tree, bent almost double, at the end of my garden. Apart from one or two isolated days over the past couple of weeks, this has been the norm. I feel sorry for the traders who have bought summer stock in what is still a tourist area, they've had a lean couple of years and were, I'm sure, looking forward to a decent season.

Our rain is coming in torrential downpours, which is actually working out really well for me. This is the first year in over a decade where I've been able to properly weed my veg beds in June, as usually the soil surface is baked hard by now and the weeds just snap off at the base, then sprout back like Medusa's snake-hair.

But I've been able to pull four barrow-loads of weeds out of my strawberry beds this week, roots and all - even those with long tap roots.

Tell him to get all his mates around for a few drinks and have them all pee on it, urine is known to be an excellent activator for compost. Plus of course they'd be doing their bit for the planet by reducing human waste going through the purifying process.
You, of course would have to find some way to spare your blushes.

At last! Looking pretty good for a nice bit of heat and sun starting this weekend, particularly for Leinster and Munster. More cloudy further north, but warm and sunny spells even there. Dust down your barbecues and get the fire pits lit!!!!

Next weekend promises to be.......very scorchio... for Spain, France and the southern UK. My son, who lives in Madrid, is quoting temps going to the high 30s to 40+ for the next week or so. He is therefore departing to Gijon in the north of the country for 4/5 days, for some type of coastal relief. We in Ireland just might get the tail of this heat-dome, yet cloud cover seems to be all-pervading at the moment. Not much blue sky out there. Interesting week or two ahead.

Ha ha ha!! Harking back to the past Del! Havn't heard the 'lashings of ginger beer' saying since, well, the last time I read an Enid Blyton book. Good description though!!

A beautiful balmy night here in the NE, not unlike a couple of similar nights last July. And I used to write the month off as a washout after some nice May and June weather.
