Looking at the ECMWF and GFS charts, lots of rain over the next few days unfortunately. Only half way through the month, many weather stations are already above the LTA rainfall, with one being 154% above the average. The summer of 2023 started off promising but went massively downhill in the last few weeks and looks to be continuing that way.

The next few days will be more like Winter. Appalling day here in Dublin 7. July looks like a write off. Hopefully August is better. But I think we've only had 1 good August in the last 20 years

It's not so much the rain as the wind. Rain you expect, records show July is one of the wetter summer months but the gales we've been having over the past couple of weeks are not normal. All the taller plants in my garden, like Crocosmia, Oriental Lilies, Shasta Daisies etc, are flattened by the combination of wind and rain. You wait so long through miserable Winters and Springs, for a splash of Summer colour and wham, one day of wind and it's all gone. Outdoor tomatoes are battered into submission too.

Charts are looking very depressing for the next while, just seems to be low after low. Tuesday and Saturday look very wet in particular. This July is the gift that keeps on giving, in terms of terrible weather. Just had another intense downpour here.

I saw a startling claim that this could be the hottest time in 120,000 years. I've read all the stories of how scientists can tell what the climate was like hundreds of years ago by reading tree rings and other signs dredged up in archaeological digs, and I'm prepared to accept them because I have no argument to put against them, but how they can substantiate a claim like that is beyond belief.

Saturday looks to be another washout, with temperatures looking to be around 13 degrees or so. Looking at the ECMWF, a lot of areas could see around 30mm of rainfall between now and Sunday.

July has been the wettest month of 2023 so far in a few places, managing to eclipse the already-wet March 2023. For example, Oak Park has had 109.9 mm of rainfall so far in July and 103.4mm in March. And obviously, there's a load more to fall.

Damp, overcast, miserable day here in Louth, with worse to come over the weekend. So glad we got a holiday in Albufeira at the start of the month. Blue skies every day, beautiful beach, high 20s temps and a lovely Atlantic breeze. Ah, the memories!!

Another dreadful, damp day here with that depressing low-hanging cloud. While I normally like the long daylight hours, it's painful with this type of weather as it just means you have to look out at that dreadful low-hanging cloudy sky all evening. And it's a shame as the long daylight hours are just going to waste.

The conveyor belt of rain continues, with the only half-decent day being Tuesday (Mardi):

Dunsany is at 154.7mm rainfall this month so far, which is around 250% of the LTA of 61.4. Many other stations are not doing much better either. This July is somehow managing to beat the terrible July of 2020.

Even if August had a 3-week heatwave, which it most likely won't, I'd still only rank this summer as average due to the terrible July. It's likely that the first week at least of August will continue with this pattern, and with definitely no heatwaves in sight, this summer is heading the same way as the summers of 2020, 2007-12, 1985, 1986, 1993 and any other bad summers.

Finally, a decent day here. The first day it hasn't rained in who knows how long. I've been busy all day mowing lawns so haven't checked any charts or anything.

In all seriousness though, another decent day, in fact it felt pretty warm. Probably the last good day of the month as the rain onslaught resumes tomorrow.
