Railway enthusiasts are being afforded the rare opportunity to travel on preserved Northern Ireland Railways diesel railcars on the Downpatrick & Co.Down Railway on Summer Saturdays. And, unlike Irish Rail, refreshments will be available onboard.

Details from the railway's website below:

"For summer Saturdays in 2022, we are running diesel trains on normal event days. This will be the 450 class railcar and hopefully the 80 class later in the summer. Steam trains are planned to return for the Lapland Express at Christmas.

Trains are running on Saturdays 16th and 30th July, 6th, 13th, 27th August, Monday 29th August and Saturday 3rd September.

Our ex-Northern Ireland Railways 450 class railcar starred in the Derry Girls episode Stranger on a Train shown in May 2022 on Channel 4. If you haven’t seen the episode, UK residents can watch it on Channel 4’s All 4 Player.

Diesel trains will run to our standard timetable, departing from Downpatrick station from 1pm - 4pm every 45 minutes. We will be serving a limited selection of snacks and drinks from an on board trolley service or the buffet counter on board."
