Re: You Learn Something New Every Day!
Wow, here's a good one!
The grandson of the 10th POTUS (President of the United States) is still ALIVE!
1 - John Tyler (1790-1862) was the 10th president of the US from 1841-1845. His son Lyon Gardiner Tyler was born in 1853, when John was 63!
2 - John's son, Lyon Gardiner Tyler (1853-1935), an historian, fathered a son, Harrison Ruffin Tyler, born in 1928, when Lyon was 75!
3 - Harrison Ruffin Tyler, (1928 and still alive), a retired chemical engineer, is therefore the grandson of the 10th US President!

Today I learned about these wind up clockwork fans, Paillard fans made 1902-1910. They would be perfect for times of hot weather and expensive energy. I don't know if it is true they can go for 30 - 60 minutes on one full winding, but maybe (?). I love them.

Which is why I only drink bottled water these days - I tell myself that it's tested and quite safe. Given that half the population appear to be high on legal/illegal drugs I have no wish to participate by drinking whatever passes through them into the Slaney.Ncdjd2 wrote: ↑Tue Jul 12, 2022 8:36 pm Today I learned that at any given moment 43.5 percent of our river creatures worldwide are high on over the counter prescription drugs.

I was one who heard the message spread by the likes of Carl Sagan(with the best of intentions), but a nuclear winter is probably not something achievable even with thousands of times more bombs than were ever created all being detonated at once.
The early calculations were more than likely wrong. It’s a myth.

In other market regions, BMW car manufacturer is to introduce subscription service for heated car seats and steering wheel
Cue 12 months time, Radio 1 will be broadcasting 1 minute long ads for BMW, "Drive your kids to school in your BMW on a frosty morning with pre heated car seats" intoned by the same woman now who does the Hyundai ads.

All these stations and nothing worth watching. Will do the usual and either hit youtube or switch on the DVD player.

Re: You Learn Something New Every Day!
I was in Paris c 15 years ago. Met a friend for coffee. He is fluent in French and had been living there since the early 90s. When I arrived, he was in the company of an older man - aged around 50 or so. He knew him from his line of work (my friend was a history tutor in one of the universities, the other guy was a medieval history specialist). Yer man left shortly after I arrived.
Just found out this guy has a unique place in history. He was the last man to be condemned to death in France back in October 1980. He along with six others were sitting on death row, awaiting the guillotine before a change of government the following year (Mitterand abolished capital punishment) ensured that they got life sentences instead. Think the guy did 20 years before getting out around 2000 and took up the history in prison.

I learnt today that years ago in coal mines over in the UK, there was lad that would go down the coal mine an hour before the coal mining operation would take place everyday carrying out a particularly hazardous but essential job ->
"The practice of firing the gas before the miners entered the pit was first put into force at Mostyn Colliery, North Wales, about the year 1650. The mode of operation was for a man who made it his special business to descend the shaft some time before the hour of commencing work. This man, clad in wet sackcloth, crawled upon his belly into the workings, and by raising lighted candles on the end of a long stick like a fishing pole up to the roof he would light the gas and then lie close on the floor until the flame of the explosion had passed over him. Hence the origin of the term "fireman.""
Makes my rantings about work sometimes seem very trivial in comparison

My Grandfather first worked the mines at 12 yrs old,his title was bird watchmen,he carried a bird in a cage into the mines before the miners worked.By the bird's behaviour he could tell if gasses had built up in the shaft or not and if it was safe to mine.To flush the shaft they had these portable bellows to clear a shaft if the bird died.Ncdjd2 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 16, 2022 10:29 pm I learnt today that years ago in coal mines over in the UK, there was lad that would go down the coal mine an hour before the coal mining operation would take place everyday carrying out a particularly hazardous but essential job ->

Re: You Learn Something New Every Day!
The oldest rocks in the world are in Hudson Bay, Canada. The bedrock there is about 4 billion years old. Most rock you see is several hundred million years old. Rocks go through repeating rock cycles, where they form, weather, reform, sink, rise, move, etc from and back to the lithosphere. Yes, I've been reading a bit of geology this week. It's made me realise maybe I should have read a lot of geology a long time ago. It's mad stuff. As fascinating as space. Meteorite on earth has been dated to 7 billion years old. Earth is about 4.6 billion years old. Given that humans have been in Ireland for about 30000 years max (given latest evidence re butchered reindeer bone found in Cork) it puts the age of the planet in perspective.

Re: You Learn Something New Every Day!
If anyone wants to look into the study re the massively old meteorite particles, you can read this...
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2 ... 153306.htm
Basically pre solar grains particles contained in the Murchison meteor which fell to earth in Australia in 1969. Some of this information is mind blowing, stardust that existed since a star formation baby boom about 7 billion years ago

The ITV colour strike lasted 3 months (November 1970 to February 1971) but the effects of it weren't really felt until the mid 2000s onwards.

There is a First Class bus service in Japan called 'Precious' Class.
The only catch is that the seat cannot be fully reclined because of Japanese transport law.

Me "learning" this is in the loosest possible sense of the word, but still, cool to contemplate. Protons, quarks, etc
