So I bought a 3D printer

#1

Post by PogMoThoin22 »

Months ago I backed a Kickstarter project by Anker (the well known cable and accessory maker) to build a really fast high quality 3D printer which finally delivered a few days before Christmas. I'm having great fun figuring it out. There's a learning curve, some prints need supports, others need a raft under them to keep the base stuck firmly

Here's what I've printed in the last few days

Looks like an interesting variation on the theme, especially regarding the speed at which it prints.

Yeah, it is a very solid very well built machine and all reviews are praising how they got things so right for a company that wasn't in this type of market before. It's also very early days for the slicer software which appears to be their fork of Ultimaker Cura but is not lacking any Cura features. The Android app also has some unfinished areas set out for future use, you also cannot send to print from the app yet but they've promised this will come

I keep meaning to get one but I'm afraid I know bugger all about them. All I know is how to spell "3D Printer".

This one is pretty much plug and play, takes 10 mins to assemble and does it's own self testing and bed levelling. after that all you need is the files but there are lots of sites even NASA

I have some looking up to do.

My biggest "fear" (if I can call it that) is getting one and then going "right, what do I print?" and drawing a blank.

Finding stuff isn't the issue. You can find anything easy enough, including guns https://arewecoolyet.wtf (no guns here, just a group who like to make them)

Mine is in my office which is right next to my sons room and as it can be noisy at full speed I don't do overnight printing

It's something I've looked into previously, but so far have resisted the temptation on account of having already far too many projects that aren't getting the time they deserve. My interest would be specifically in creating now-obsolete spare parts and custom designs for other/new projects, but they'd all be occasional usage, and I can't justify either the time or the money needed to get good use out of one. :( A CNC would probably align better with what I've got on at the moment, but it's nice to keep up with developments.

I also bought this a few weeks ago as a decent project to make once I got up and running. I have white, black and red filament being delivered Friday, I've been limited to wood and silver coloured as they were in stock and shipped right away and I got them last week

We have one in work. Super handy for printing spacers, washers etc of a desired dimension. Handy for little jigs and shop aids too. Made a few prototypes with it.
Also printed a replacement fold out leg for my keyboard. Found that on thingyverse. Printed a replacement knob for a friend's bbq.

I've made lots of other stuff but this gift box is especially cool, the top is geared, twist the ribbon bow to open. From here
