Over the years the number of sprockets on bicycle rear wheels increased from 6 in the 80's up to 12 or even 13 today. This made the chain thinner and the tollerance for mis-aligned gears or a sticky gear cable tiny. The least thing wrong and you gears act up. My opinion is that 9 sprockets was ideal.
