Controversial opinions...
Re: Controversial opinions...
Alex Ferguson vastly under achieved in Europe with Manchester United
Jack Charlton should have achieved more given the players at his disposal
The Super League was a great idea

Irish people who support only UK clubs have no business criticising the Ireland national team manager or the state of the players, if they are absolutely not prepared to support the domestic game.

Couldn't agree more. David seamans position for the koeman chip was shocking. Massive mistake. The Giggs goal gets me everytime. He is almost sitting down before he even hits the shot. Just stand up ffsMountain wrote: ↑Sat Aug 28, 2021 4:32 pm ...what are you certain about...but everyone else disagrees with you?
1. David Seaman was vastly overrated and deserves to be remembered as a keeper who made errors in the most important games. He gave Koeman the whole goal to kick into in Rotterdam '93, his flapping after Nayim lobbed him from a mile out in a Cup Winner's Cup final is the stuff of comedy, Giggs hit that semi final winner straight at him and yet again he fell backwards, and there was the Ronaldinho goal in WC '02.
2. England's team in the 1990s must have had the worst run of luck ever, penalties in '90 (though a lucky draw to get that far), the Koeman red card that wasn't given in '93, penalties again in '96 after the Anderson and Gascoigne chances at a golden goal, and the Beckham red card that shouldn't have been given in '98
I dont agree with the second bit. The 90 team was good but they didn't play that well throughout the tournament. Semi final was probably fair. 96 team was not as good as the 90 team. I think the semi final was over an over achievement. Bar the Holland result they were average throughout the tournament. Beckham. I would blame Beckham for being stupid before I'd blame the ref or bad luck

Is that controversial? Id have thought it's widely accepted by most, incl United fans, that European honours is the sole blot of SAFs copybook.

Aye, tedium incarnate. If I had a cent for every time I heard that the wheelbarrow would be full.
To echo a poster above, Jack Charlton had a wealth of talent at his disposal and tried his best to squander it by sticking rigidly to stone age hoofball. Players who could pass it around midfield for their respective clubs were reduced to treating it like a hot potato. Anyway, "Ole ole ole" and all that pretend Spaniard cringe.

A better domestic league doesn't automatically make the senior international side better.
A quick look at the fifa rankings shows we are above both Scotland and Greece, who both have good domestic leagues and have had good representation over the years in champs league and Europa league. 5 places behind Russia, again another decent league, and this is while we are having our worst run of results in our history.
We use the English league to develope our players because it's the most competitive in the world. We did it in the 80s with Brady, Aldridge, the 90s with keane, Irwin, the 2000s with duff keane etc and we will continue to do it for the benefit of the national team

Re: Controversial opinions...
Apart from the reality that most Irish and Irish-qualified players today are Championship or at best marginally EPL, and light years from the likes of Brady, Keane, and Duff, none of that means we shouldn't use our own league to develop depth of talent. If we were really interested in our football it wouldn't be a chore.Love and theft wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 12:25 pm A better domestic league doesn't automatically make the senior international side better.
