So it seems Windows 11 is available (just seen some Currys PCWorld adds on the TV).

Anyone using it yet?

Will upgrade soon but wondered what it needs to run well. Had to put Windows 7 back on some old stuff when Windows 10 got to bloaty and dragged the machines to a halt.

Another "free" upgrade but do I/we really need it?

I was setting up new laptops in work and out of the box they're asking if you want to upgrade to 11, seemed a bit cheeky

Still some bigger companies on Windows 7. If you are only using office, a company db of some kind and custom written apps why do you need anything more other than of course for security.

I'm involved in a project at work to upgrade to Windows 10 and it's far from finished!

The problem is that a lot of specialist equipment in the Pharma industry is qualified, tested and proven to work at this configuration (pc included). Once it's qualified, it's not touched until it's REALLY necessary and if changed, has to be re-qualified.

If you're on WIN7 or 8 I'd stick with it.

I hate WIN10 with a passion.

It's amazing there aren't more OS choices.

The guys I know still on Windows 7 are basically Pharma Industries.

Even if the custom written software will work the systems need to be re-qualified.

Windows 7 went EOL in 2020. You really shouldn't be still using it in a corporate environment.

AFAIK MS still will sell W7 updates to large organizations

As said above, compliance and certification are big drivers as to what a machine runs

Many machines happily chug away in their own little world never suffering the insult of being connected to internet.

In the day job we have a unit running MS-DOS and two running XP. All standalone machines

IMHO Win 10 stinks

Many CPUs are not compatible with Win 11

UNIX has never looked so tempting

Same situation in my industry, the machines I work on daily are still running Windows Server 2003! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

100% OK to be using Windows 7 in a corporate environment provided you can afford to pay for support.

I have one old client that I set up virtual machines (on windows 10) so they could run Windows 95 because there is no new app that does that does the printed reports they want. They probably could change but explaining to OAP accountants that isn't worth the effort.

Thats an easy thing to sort out.

When you have custom hardware and matching drivers at the root of the issue its even less enticing to change things

Reports of something like a 10-20% gaming performance drop on W11 at the moment if you have an AMD CPU so probably best to wait alright.
AMD and MS are supposed to be working on updates. I'd give it till after Christmas if gaming is important.

My main photo processing rig at home was doing a Windows update (it's on Windows 10) and the update app told me I can't upgrade to Windows 11. Ram and storage are well exceeded. The processor is missing something (can't remember what) but the rig (and processor) is 4 years old.

Ah well, I'm not too worried....

Upgraded to 11 and went back to 10 a few hours later, was a quick a painless process, did not like 11 at all, but with such a easy was to go back to 10 i would say give 11 a go, i will be staying on 10 for the foreseeable future, 11 is half balked and needs plenty more time in the oven.

Tried to give it a go yesterday when all of a sudden on a reboot I discovered a "PC Health Check" had downloaded and wanted to run. First thought was it was some of the usual virus crap but on further investigation it proved to be Microsofts tool for checking if your PC can run Windows 11.

My quad core Xeon machine with 32GB RAM can't

But not really that bothered.
