Failing all that, contact your nearest window replacement company. They will normally have a lot of old windows that they pull out, that will have these.

Better still replace the lot with newer better quality handles. Your house insurance will thankyou.

Hey Isha, I made these gothic style windows 25 years ago for a client who wanted to build a large library. Very large floor to ceiling window sections, some measuring 12' long from teak. His brief was he wanted a gothic look that would complement his indoor book cases. This was the result, and he was very pleased. That was 25+ years ago.................your basta handles pre date these by another 25 years, as I used them in 1977 or there abouts. Maybe you have a sentimental attachment to them

It's true - I don't like change.
Those links above are out of stock. But I've ordered something online as a sample to see if it'll work. Maybe I will have to change handles completely but that will probably have to wait a while. Nothing is simple.

I made all the templates for the glass double glazed units which were made by Careys glass, Roscrea.

I also made the top roof lite section in pvc section.

I must check my old stock of window handles in the workshop. You never know whats lerking in an old cabinet.

It's not "perfect". I had to drill two new holes. The depth of new Basta handle base is thinner which means it's not completely flush to window. I may have to tighten that upper screw but I'm scared to touch glass. But it works! Dammit it works. Only three more to go.

As a previous clerk of works for joinery on apartment blocks, I would have marked up that screw for snagging on the next list.

But as Mr Handsome had no act nor part in its repair, I must commend you on your efforts, that probably would have surpassed many a man's attempt at diy.............cr's included.

As you are still a bit tentative on breaking glass. Here is the final tip of the day.


Put the top of the screw where the screwdriver fits, flat down on the glass along side the edge of the frame.
If the point comes above the timber edge, its too long and will break the glass. If the point is below, then it wont touch the glass.

Here finally endeth the lesson.

First screw is short and safe. Second screw is long and will break the glass. I hope this clarifys things for you

I'm somewhat freaked out to know I broke that rule. But I think I got away with it as the screws went in past the place where the glass reached. All the more nerve-wracking for my next attempt though. Which has to wait. As I only bought one for testing today.

No, its just that the glass is not wide enough to come where the screw hole is. But its best to assume that it may well be that deep. Safer to have a screw that cant possibly reach the glass under any circumstances. In your case the glass was never in the zone of the screw.

Ya got lucky....
