Colour 35 mm slides to digital

I have a few hundred slides of my own and now have inherited another batch. Any advice on getting them onto digital format? Years ago I was quoted 10 cent a slide but now it is much more so what of the DIY scanner devices for slides? Are results as good as a professional job? I have heard it can be very time consuming.

I used a Plustek 8100 and the results were very good to my eyes. I bought the scanner new and then sold it for a small loss when I was finished with it. Cleaning of the slides before scanning seems to be a critical step, luckily mine didn't need much cleaning. Even still, yes it was time consuming but was a bit of fun.
