George W. McLaurin, a 54 year old African American, sits in an anteroom, apart from the other students, as he attends class at the University of Oklahoma in 1948. The university insisted that segregation be maintained, but a Supreme Court ruling forced the institution to accept McLaurin as a student.

Sorry, this is not a very upbeat Friday Feeling type of photograph but I am very struck by it. I will find something nicer and put it in later, I promise.

Re: Great Photographs
Found a little trove of interesting photos this morning. A few..
Early residents at Lake McDonald, Montana, posed with “Wives Wanted” sign, left to right: Bill Daucks, Frank Geduhn, Esli Apgar, and Dimon Apgar, ca. 1901. This is where the Tinder ploy of 'man posing with cat' first evolved.
Zanzibar, 1947. Nanny posing with her charge, Farrokh Bulsara. Who would grow up to be known as Freddie Mercury.
Launching the James Caird from the shore of Elephant Island to South Georgia which is 800 nautical away, 24 April 1916. 800 nautical miles is 920 miles. This was part of Ernest Shackleton's mission to rescue the men stranded during the Endurance expedition. It took 17 days to sail to their destination and then they had to walk across the mountains and get help. All survived.

Compulsory collectivisation. 1929. Soviet Russia. The banner says ''Read books. The book is the best friend of the peasant. Books will teach you how to carry out agriculture properly.''
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collectiv ... viet_Union
Collectivisation was pursued between 1928 and 1940, resulted in many famines and the death toll is estimated at 4 - 7 million people.

Re: Great Photographs
Some nice photos to cheer us all up.
Robert Wadlow at 10 years old with his Dad. He went on to be 8' 11'' tall, but unfortunately died at 22 years old.
Elvis Presley at 2 years old with his parents in 1937. You can see how he turned into a good looking adult.
A little girl riding an alligator at a Californian alligator park in the 1950s. As you do.

This guy takes lovely photographs.
This is an unusual one of alligator eyes in a stream at night. It's not among his beautiful photos which you can see at the link. But it is unusual.

What James Webb sees vs what spritzer saw. These telescopes work on a longer wavelength of light so they can peer further back in time, since light that travels long distances tends to increase its wavelength.
This is what the infrared telescopes see vs what Hubble saw:

Re: Great Photographs
The shapes in creatures eyes close up, like you see in those macro shots of ants faces and magnified in those dew drops etc look to me like cyborg technology. The forms in nature are awesome. Some microscopic creatures look like they have cogs.CelticRambler wrote: ↑Tue Aug 09, 2022 10:24 am Jeez - those dew-drops on the eyes look worse than getting rain on me specs!
