James Hoban, an architect from Kilkenny, built Belcamp house in 1785. ( Known locally as Belcamp College, next to Balgriffin on Dublin's Northside).
What famous big house in America did James Hobin also design a couple of years later ?

Re: History Quiz
But what Irish town did the man who burnt the White House come from? He is commemorated there by a massive monument.

Do you give up? It's an east coast town, if that's any help.

Rostrevor. The monument is like the Wellington one in the Phoenix Park.

Re: History Quiz
Here's another one from the same period in history. Where would you find a monument to a Canadian hero who saved his country from the Americans? It's a replacement for the original which was 'allegedly' blown up by a man whose family had emigrated from Wexford - a distant relation of mine and the family maintain that he was fitted up by the British. Is that too easy?

I could be wrong, but if it's the one i was alluding to then its in Queenstown in Ontario, and is named Brocks Monument. The original was allegedly damaged by Benjamin Lett.
Re: History Quiz
It's a tunnel to be sure, short and all as it is. A bridge carries a road or some form of channel across or under a gap or other channel; eg a road or waterway or another railway whereas a tunnel goes under some manner of land or property or whatever.

Re: History Quiz
Very good, your reference to Cobh was too cryptic for my feeble brain! Anyway, the 'wicked' Brits got my relation in the end and managed to have him jailed in the USA. When he was released he was mysteriously poisoned while on a trading expedition. His brother erected a monument on Benjamin Lett's grave lambasting the wicked Brits and their agents for the murder. The 11ft high monument (to right of photograph) is slightly more modest than that to General Brock.Knucklehead6 wrote: ↑Sat Sep 11, 2021 12:26 pm I could be wrong, but if it's the one i was alluding to then its in Queenstown in Ontario, and is named Brocks Monument. I believe the capital (before formal recognition) floated around the States until finding its current home in DC. Hovering between New York and Philadelphia. Let's pluck for the latter.Uncle Frank wrote: ↑Sat Sep 11, 2021 10:15 pm I'll throw up a quicky.
