My understanding is that these are not cases of Covid-19, but positive results from testing implying infection by the virus.

This is not the number who go on to develop Covid-19 (the illness).

I really do not understand why such statements are not challenged every time they are uttered.

Your understanding is wrong. A lab positive test for SARS-CoV-2 is considered a 'Case of Covid 19' under the case definition from the European CDC, The HSE, and the WHO.

PUBLIC HEALTH OFFICIALS have recorded 4,208 positive PCR cases of Covid-19 in Ireland today.

Additionally, 6,410 positive antigen tests have been registered through the HSE website for a combined total of 10,618.

As of 8am this morning, 624 patients with Covid-19 were in hospital, including 66 in intensive care.

Yesterday, the Department of Health reported an additional 3,872 positive PCR cases and 4,759 antigen tests from the previous 24 hours, as well as 4,400 PCR cases on Sunday, 5,091 PCR cases on Saturday, 4,759 antigen cases on Sunday and 3,893 on Saturday.

692 Covid-19 patients were in hospital yesterday, with 72 in ICU.

One can imagine how many more cases really there are every day than get reported. It must be a lot especially with pcr positivity quite high and LFT antigen tests more common now.

I know its been a couple of weeks since any updates here but its worth noting 2 weeks on daily case numbers are still over 7,000.

In Northern Ireland, two more people who had previously tested positive for Covid-19 have died, according to the Department of Health.

That reads as if it has been carefully worded ...... not saying they died from Covid, not even that they died with Covid, just that they previously had a positive test.

Maybe they never developed Covid at all ......

Over two weeks since my last post and we've hardly gone down below 8k cases a day currently Covid: Ireland logs 8,337 further cases on Friday

So since my last post that's a minimum of another 125k cases of covid.
