Closing schools would put an awful lot of added pressure on the health system. I suspect that's the real reason they're reluctant to close them though they would never admit that. Also, if teachers had to go on the PUP payment I don't think some of them would be so eager to close.

It's great that the ICU numbers are staying low. This day last year we'd 73 in ICU and rising at about 12 per day.

I hope you are right but I'm afraid that we are on a different point on the curve. The hospital admissions are rising and I think the ICU will have the same rise in another week or so

Last year we peaked at 2,020 in hospital on the 18th of Jan. They say hospital cases are about 9 days behind case numbers and ICU are another 9 days further. They said on Virgin news earlier that the majority of the 94 ICU cases we currently have in ICU are actually Delta.

We'd a 57% positive test rate yesterday and that's only actual PCR tests.

A record 23,817 cases of Covid-19 have been reported in Ireland, as the Department of Health confirmed there are no current plans to require a booster dose of a vaccine to access indoor dining.

Probably not all Omicron but Ireland has the world's highest Covid-19 rate. How did it go so wrong? <<<<< EDIT Sorry link for last year

Ireland has seventh highest Covid rate in world – beaten by just six small nations
The only locations to top Ireland in the table are Aruba, the Isle of Man, Cyprus, Curacao, Andorra and San Marino – all small island nations or microstates.

I wouldn't see it as a big deal in the short term. A few days ago Denmark were higher and a few days before that the UK and Norway were higher than us. In a few days time it's be someone else. It all depends on that stage of the wave each country is at and what restrictions are in place at the time.

I remember a time when we were told that one of the main purposes of vaccination was to reduce the amount of virus existing in the community to prevent the likelihood of proliferation of mutations, which is much more likely the more virus there is. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Not a big deal anymore, I guess.

But if we didn't have any vaccine would we have much tighter lock downs? Maybe a question of the megathread?

I'm surprised to see a drop in hosp/ICU already. Our case numbers started to rocket on Christmas Eve which was two weeks ago today. We should be still seeing hospital numbers rise rapidly but they seem to have stalled, for today anyway.

And still going down Number of Covid patients in hospital falls for second day
This morning 917 people are being treated for the disease in the country's health system, a drop of 24 since Thursday.

Eighty-four people are currently being treated in intensive care units. This is the lowest level since November.

Great news. If they continue to decline the next recommendations from NPHET could be interesting.

Denmark, comparable population in half our land space, testing 5 times more than us, has similar numbers of cases to us presently , but with 15% positivity, versus our approximately 50%. It seems we just love a crowd and a huddle, us Irish. And to be honest, at this stage, what more can be done than has been done, given a wide open Pandora's box.

Looking back to the very first post, the so-called "pessimistic" scenario has certainly been reached in regards to case numbers. Taking a guess at all the non-tested active cases out there we have probably met the "goal" twice over.

Didn't think that was going to happen honestly ...

Thankfully (so far...knock on wood) the hospital numbers don't seem to be keeping pace

09.01. The Examiner
The Department of Health has confirmed 21,384 cases of Covid have been recorded today.

It follows a record number of daily cases being confirmed on Saturday.

Yesterday, 26,122 cases were confirmed by health officials.

Some 984 patients with Covid are currently in hospital, with the head of the HSE warning that the health service is “under stress”.

However, Paul Reid said there “is always room for optimism” saying that ICU cases are holding stable.

Or just maybe they caught it while in hospital?
